About the Author
David Hilbert (1862-1943) received his PhD from the University of K?nigsberg, Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia) in 1884. He remained there until 1895, after which he was appointed Professor of Mathematics at the University of G?ttingen. He held this professorship for most of his life. Hilbert is recognized as one of the most influential mathematicians of the 19th and early 20th centuries. His own discoveries alone would have given him that honour, yet it was his leadership in the field of mathematics throughout his later life that distinguishes him. Hilbert's name is given to Infinite-Dimensional space, called Hilbert space, used as a conception for the mathematical analysis of the kinetic gas theory and the theory of radiations.

Richard Courant (1888-1972) obtained his doctorate at the University of G?ttingen in 1910. Here, he became Hilbert's assistant. He returned to G?ttingen to continue his research after World War I, and founded and headed the university's Mathematical Institute. In 1933, Courant left Germany for England, from whence he went on to the United States after a year. In 1936, he became a professor at the New York University. Here, he headed the Department of Mathematics and was Director of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences - which was subsequently renamed the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. Among other things, Courant is well remembered for his achievement regarding the finite element method, which he set on a solid mathematical basis and which is nowadays the most important way to solve partial differential equations numerically.

state of the art in the 50's

Beware the german edition is the prewar edition, and the english edition is a

complete overhaul to include modern material at the time. This is not really a

textbook, but a sourcebook of "issues" in partial differential equations. Some

problems have been forgotten now due to the focussing on real, linear equations

and weak solutions (as described, for example, in the books by Hormander). It is

a gem for who wants some taste of the full breadth of theory of PDE's.

Vol. I is standard mathematical physics. I've only used vol. II for one topic, first order partial differential equations, linear, quasilinear, and nonlinear. The treatment is very good. This is not a standard topic, it's rarely if ever taught to physicists. Readers brought up on standard math physics will likely be surprised to learn that first order pdes are 1-1 with dynamical systems. Other recommendable books on first order pdes are Duff, Sneddon, Garabedian, and John.

anatomy for diagnostic imaging - proof reading????

I bought this book as part of my study for the UK radiological anatomy fellowship exam. Basically I think it went to print prior to proof reading! There are numerous factual errors throughout the text that make a potentially good idea both irritating and useless. It actually takes longer to verify the information in Ryan and McNicholas' book than to read BOTH Ellises clinical anatomy, and Last's anatomy cover to cover.
The anatomy of the bronchial tree - Fig 4.10 page 116 sums things up. Nice idea - pitiful delivery.

I agree with both of the previous opinions.

This book presents radiological anatomy in a perfect format for registrars/residents studying for the part I radiology exam. The problem is the numerous factual errors that are present in the book.

My recommendation would be to use this book as a review of material previously studied and not as a primary text.

this book brings information together in a relatively short space that would have to be gleaned from reading several different books. it is to the point, with good line drawings and is clear and concise.
