A must have for anyone looking to make whips or improve their skills

For anyone that's ever thought of making a whip, this book is the best source of comprehensive knowledge available. Covering everything from making the core all the way to tying on the finishing knots. All the instructions are very clear and straightforward allowing for anyone to be able to make a fully functional whip even if you have no prior experience. Having had none before, this book allowed me to build my first whip and gave me the knowledge necessary to make bigger and longer whips. All in all, this book is a must have!

This book has all you need to know to complete a nice looking whip

Steven has done an excellent job of putting together a book explaining the build of a whip from start to finish using paracord. Personally, I am an experienced braider, still I had a problem with the proper construction of the core. Steven explains that quite well in this book. Not sure what it is in some of the other reviews that some readers failed to understand about this subject.

I found it quite comprehensive for a beginning braider.

My Kindle will not search this book >:-(
References list is just a list, cannot connect to whispernet to find the materials.
Will have to contact the author, not really a problem just a hindrance.
I wonder if the editor is the reason???

About the Author

Asif Saifuddin, BSc (Hons), MBChB, MRCP, FRCR, is a consultant musculoskeletal radiologist at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust in Stanmore, UK. He earned his medical degree from The University of Manchester Medical School, undertook his radiology training in Leeds, and obtained a Fellowship of The Royal College of Radiologists. He is primarily interested in all aspects of musculoskeletal radiology, but in particular diagnostic and interventional imaging of musculoskeletal tumours.

Philippa Tyler, BSc (Hons), MBBS, MRCS, FRCR, is a consultant musculoskeletal radiologist at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust in Stanmore, UK and an honorary lecturer at University College London, UK. She graduated in medicine from University College London and undertook her radiology training at St Mary’s Hospital, London. She completed an MRI fellowship at St Mary’s Hospital, London followed by a fellowship in musculoskeletal radiology at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. Dr. Tyler’s practice involves all aspects of interventional and diagnostic musculoskeletal radiology, and she has a special interest in spinal imaging.

Rikin Hargunani, BSc (Hons), MBBS, MRCS, FRCR, is a consultant musculoskeletal radiologist at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust in Stanmore and an honorary senior lecturer at University College London, UK. He graduated in medicine from University College London and completed radiology training at the Royal Free Hospital London prior to undertaking a fellowship in musculoskeletal radiology at Vancouver General Hospital in Canada. Reduce, reuse and recycle

The saying, "one man's junk is another man's treasure," could easily be an alternative title to Adam Minter's "Junkyard Planet."

Junkyard Planet will get you thinking about everything that you use, especially those items which you do not use up. So where does this stuff go? Well, a lot of it gets exported overseas, especially to China, where the need for scrap metal, scrap paper and scrap plastic is high. Recyclables are headed to places where the need for raw materials is not met by the amount of scrap generated in-country and where the cost of virgin materials is considerably higher.

There is value in scrap. It will be found in those places where the costs of sorting, separating and cleaning it, along with transport, is lower than its value in reuse or in recycled materials. The margin or difference in cost is where money is.

One of most important principles Minter espouses is, "the worst, dirtiest recycling is still better than the very best clear-cut forest or the most up-to-date open-pit mine." In other words, most low grade scrap would end up in a landfill if it were not exported to a place where its future value is above the cost of recycling and transport.

Adam Minter knows his subject well. He was brought up in a Minnesota family with a modestly-sized family recycling business. He understands the terminology, the business process, how scrapping works. Metals were the key material in his parents family business. Minter's travels take him across the United States and Asia, to China in particular. With the rapid rise of the Chinese economy, it is China most of all, where international recycling is in full form. As China's economy moves from third-world to first-world stature, the amount of construction going on and infrastructure development is staggering. China is a nation mostly poor in resources. It is with the help of trans-shipped recyclables that China is vaulting ahead.

The Economics of The Global Scrap Trade

The scrap yards that I remember from my youth were what the author refers to as auto junkyards. I always believed they were the one and only place where scrap went, whether it was a car being sold in pieces or put into a crusher and turned into a pile of junk metal. I never really knew that there were places that specialized in other types of scrap, but I soon learned about the long history of scrap yards as I read this book.

The author takes the reader on a tour of the various types of scrap that exist. From electrical wire, to electric motors, to plastics, to cars and to steel and aluminum and many more, each type of scrap has a market and a place in the recycling pecking order. In addition, there are places in China that specialize in each of these types of scrap.

Our garbage is China's, and to a lesser extent, India's raw materials from which new products spring. Each has a growing economy and a developing middle class that wants the same goods that are present in the United States. In addition, we are still addicted to buying inexpensive merchandise from China and the "raw" materials have to come from somewhere. The easiest way to obtain those goods is to come to the United States and buy them from recyclers and scrap dealers.

Although that would seem to be an expensive proposition; buying a container of scrap, shipping it to China and then separating it into useful parts, nothing could be further from the truth. The containers travel back to China virtually free. The shipping companies have to get the ships and containers back to China, and they would get nothing for an empty one way trip, so they offer deep discount shipping to get something to help cover the cost of fuel. And, getting the product ready is also inexpensive as labor in developing countries is also cheap.

The author made several points worth pondering. One, if the developing world didn't buy our scrap, it would end up in landfills, filling them more quickly and burying materials that have significant value. In addition, by buying our scrap, these countries are not opening mines to find the raw materials, which saves the environment and cuts greenhouse gas emissions. Imagine how many emissions would come from a copper mine, where 100 tons of material have to be moved to extract one ton of copper ore. Although the methods of stripping wire, or melting plastic in China are hardly ideal, they beat the various alternatives available.

The final take away from this book is that it is best to reduce your purchasing habits, then to reuse items as much as possible, and only then to recycle. It certainly opened my eyes. In addition, I found the book to be wonderful read. The author wrote well, and despite some redundancy, the book is full of important information. I cannot recommend it highly enough!

Surprisingly Good!

I enjoyed this book from start to finish, it's been a while since I've enjoyed a non-fiction book this much. I read an excerpt a few months ago and it really whetted my appetite, and I wasn't disappointed after reading it. First of all, it's a very readable book, and it's not bogged down by excessive statistics. Of course, just from the nature of the subject, some stats are necessary, but he handles it with a deft touch. In some hands, recycling statistics could be deadly. While he makes it all very interesting, what I especially enjoyed was the way he constantly brought in the human element, with many interesting and informative individuals. It was a constant treat to meet some of the people behind the scenes. I'm not really equipped to analyse his writing style, but I was impressed at how easy (and fun!) it was to read. For me, this is the best type of non-fiction, informative and fun at the same time. Adam Minter hit this one out of the park.

About the Author
Wenda K. Bauchspies is Assistant Professor of Science, Technology, and Society and Women’s Studies in the STS Program at Pennsylvania State University.

Jennifer Croissant is Associate Professor in the Department of Women’s Studies at the University of Arizona.

Sal Restivo is Professor of Sociology and Science Studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is co-editor of Math Worlds: Philosophical and Social Studies of Mathematics (1992) and author of Science, Society, and Values: Toward a Sociology of Objectivity (1994).

Amazing!

I love this book simply because it give and idea how technology, science and society are all linked to each other and how they impact to our lives. I also have professor who teaching me this class and she also wrote this book. Recommend it! by the way kindle version more comfortable to read because navigation thru chapters.

as an introduction this is a horrible failure

As introductory works go, this book is terrible. While the authors are honest about the fact that they are sociologists, they are not at all clear on what kinds of biases this results in in their treatment. Although they manage passingly well to enthuse the reader for the field, they over-sociologize almost everything, spend large amounts of text on remarks that are either not pertinent to the discussion or too vague to be meaningful statements, while they meanwhile quickly mention other topics that are far more controversial than they imply.
They suggest that they do not want to get "caught up" in the science wars, but do suggest that they see science as to be understood only in social terms, while being largely uncritical of the notion that the social is just as much of a social construct as everything else, preferring to reify it instead, as though it is the "rock bottom" of useful/meaningful analysis of the social, intersubjective world. They try to mention far too many subjects that they don't actually treat in any amount of detail, which is very noticeable once you've noticed it once or twice, and similarly their argumentation for asserting that certain processes play a role is almost always horribly vague, while the examples they supply are often not even to the point.
Basically, it reads as though they have no idea yet how to construct a convincing argument, or that they prefer giving vague hints (about how "power structures" control, or determine, or whatever a field, as though all power structures really are the same, have the same influence, etc.) over actual analysis. This, however, is not the way to do science. It's fine that influence is hard to measure directly, but this does not mean that you have a licence to write anything. Insightful analysis is a virtue in any part of life (except 'religion', i.e. Dogma).
While the authors seem more or less sympathetic, I cannot conscionably recommend their book, and especially not as an introduction into STS.

Not a very good read

For starters, this was a required textbook for a college course I was taking and the instructor is an author.
This book is mostly a cause and effect piece on technology and 75% of it is common sense like "typewriters destroyed job opportunities for scribes." The other 25% is opinion that is presented as fact and backed up with almost no evidence.

As I was forced to read this garbage, I just kept getting the notion that the authors thought what they were writing was so incredibly profound instead of it being the most obvious concepts I have ever had to read.

It did however ship very quickly and was in nice condition and stuff. This would have been a great experience if I had just accidentally gotten a Dr. Suess book instead because it might have actually broaden my knowledge base more so.

I'd recommend this book to a 10-12 year old with a great vocabulary because the concepts are geared for that age but the word choice is a little pretentious. But if you have to take this for a college course I would just search for it online and use CTRL-F whenever it gets referenced in assignments. I took the class online and wish that I had done that.

Better than most useless manuals

In comparison to many student manuals that just list an answer and a page number if you want to know more, this manual goes through most of the confusing calculations. The manual covers all odd numbers. Program output graphs are displayed as well as the appropriate tables for the graphs.

1 star off because I have yet to find a solution manual that explains why each step is done, which, is kind of what a student needs in a solution manual. For the sake of copying answers, a student will just do exponentially worse on a test.

Clear, Straightforward.

This is the best book about commitment in the workplace so far as I am concerned. Readers may find the style of writing, contents and structure so clear and straightforward.
If you STILL recognise employees' commitment to their organisation is composed of only one dimension based upon "affection" or "identification", probably you're wrong. And if you find your coworkers and supervisors may seem committed to the organisation, their behaviours lead to various results, not simply determined as a good citizen's.
This book will give you a key to solve what we think about "complexed" commitment. Essential for MBA students, researchers and HR managers. Good work, in a word.

Young people and others will appreciate another book that matters, in both content and design: Ablaze: Stories of Daring Teen Saints, by Colleen Swaim. This book is a gem, plain and simple. Here are just three of the best elements: *the book include several well-known saints, like St. Dominic Savio and St. Maria Goretti, but these bios aren’t the “same-old” facts. Swaim infuses the stories with a fresh, invigorating voice that shows these remarkable people as more 3-dimensional than the usual narratives. *the bulk of the book is new-to-most saints, or saints most will only have a passing knowledge of, from St. Kitizio of Africa to Blessed Chiara of Italy, and many others. Their stories are told in a way that makes Ablaze a must-read. It truly inspires a sense of longing for holiness. *each saint/chapter ends with “saintly challenges,” offering readers a chance to apply the lessons of the saint’s life to his or her own, through media, prayers and recipes. Think trying a homemade chai tea recipe to give as a gift after reading about St. Alphonsa from India, or being challenged to put into practice a daily schedule to emulate St. Stantislaus. The aim is a spiritual awakening for youth, so they’ll become wholehearted Catholics. How about role models who have already made the journey? Here’s a collection of stories about young heroes for inspiration: ""Ablaze: Stories of Daring Teen Saints," by Colleen Swaim“Ablaze: Stories of Daring Teen Saints” by high school teacher Colleen Swaim, is about eight teenagedsaints or “blesseds” recognized officially by the church. (Of course there are many more whose names we’ll never know.) Three of Swaim’s subjects were from Italy, and the other five from Chile, Uganda, Poland, India and Spain. The youngest is 11-year-old St. Maria Goretti. Swaim writes about some who were obvious saints from the get-go, like Dominic Savio who served Mass daily at age five. Or Stanislaus Kostka, a home-schooled kid in 1564 who levitated during Mass at age 14. Or young Kizito. He lived in Uganda and was a page in the court of an evil king who also happened to be a pedophile. Kizito, newly baptized at age 14, went singing to his martyrdom, along with 15 other boys and young men, St. Charles Lwanga and some adult Christians. But when Juanita Solar was a youngster, she was rich, spoiled and had temper tantrums. (Nothing too saintly there.) A typical student, she called her boarding school “a dungeon,” and hated to go back after summer break. People can change. Juanita entered a Carmelite convent at age 18 and while her life was brief, today she’s known as the “St. Teresa of the Andes.” The most recent addition to this select company is Chiara “Luce” Badano. Called “a saint of our times,” she’s been chosen by Pope Benedict as one of the patrons for World Youth Day 2011. Before she died of bone cancer at age 18, she “lived the Gospel” doing acts of love for others. She appeared average ― hanging out in coffee shops with friends, playing tennis and swimming. She might even be called “the saint who flunked high school math.” She offered all her suffering to God, and 20 years after her death, in 2010, she was named Blessed Chiara. Swaim has arranged her appealing book with lots of extra tidbits from helpful definitions and photos to brief discussion-starters, saintly challenges and prayers. Not a great read, but the questions at the end of the chapters are helpful in creating introspection and conversation with my kids. I wish the book had more modern day saints that boys could relate to. I was disappointed that Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati wasn't included in the book. The writing in the book isn't great, and in an effort to be brief, doesn't have enough detail in some places. Still, it's useful in that the chapters are short, with enough information, followed by topics of discussion that it is a decent learning tool, but not as enjoyable or inspiring as I had hoped.

Love this book

Love this book. I have twins that are preparing for confirmation. I wanted them to have more relevant resources for saints. This fit the bill perfectly. There are reflection questions, prayers, even a recipe in one of the books. I bought both volumes, one for each twin. I am planning on purchasing again so they can each have a copy of both books. They don't want to put these down and are interested in the volume that they do not currently have.
