About the Author
Gail Simon:

I came to systemic practice through social work in the early 1980s when I trained in family therapy using structural, strategic and early Milan approaches. I undertook further training at the Kensington Consultation Centre (KCC) in London in the early 1990s. In 1990, I co-founded The Pink Practice as a response to oppressive psychotherapeutic practices against the lesbian, gay and queer communities. Lots of people think research is dull until they find out how many forms of inquiry there are which echo the values and activities of their own practice. My doctoral research was on “Writing (as) Systemic Practice” in which I experimented with dialogical writing styles to reflect my conversational and ethical practice in therapy, supervision and education. I lead the Professional Doctorate in Systemic Practice at the University of Bedfordshire and enjoy researching the extraordinariness that is involved in human systems and writing and editing for professional journals and for the new systemic practice publishing tent, Everything is Connected Press.


Alex Chard:

In the early part of my career I worked within the voluntary and statutory sectors with young people in trouble. I then began to work independently. I work as a systemic organisational consultant, a role which includes inquiry into organisational functioning, culture and practice. Over 23 , my consultancy practice has included public sector contexts including work within children’s social care, education, youth work, criminal justice and within the voluntary sector. My experience of assisting organisations manage change has included working with statutory boards, with management teams helping them to improve their services and on occasion managing services or critical projects. My current organisational inquiry and research contexts include conducting inter-agency case reviews where significant harm has been caused and in that context developing reflexive approaches to creating pan-organisational learning. My MSc. dissertation was a systemic inquiry into the impact of government inspection on the management of a service. My doctoral thesis The Art of Organisational Development was on creating systemic change and development in public sector management. I am also a visiting senior lecturer to the Professional Doctorate in Systemic Practice at the University of Bedfordshire and have developed a systemic module for a Social Work Masters Programme.

Truly a god send of a dictionary for learning

I really like this English-Vietnamese dictionary so much that I bought three more to give to each of my wife's family who have immigrated from Vietnam in the past few years. I love just looking at the pictures and then seeing both the English and Vietnamese words identifying the objects on the page by looking at the object's number below that has what it is in both languages. There are indexes in the back of the book in both languages so if you know the name of something, you can see what page it is on and find out what it is called in the other language. Very help

This is my 2nd time ordering the same book!!

My first language is vietnamese and born in the states. However, my Vietnamese is not as fluent as I wished. So I ordered the Oxford Picture Dictionary and it was sooooo helpful. I can speak read and write Vietnamese, but more at a middle school level. I still find this book very useful. There are words I don't know that I can quickly scan thought the book and get the translation to Vietnamese. The pictures are clear with old colors. LOVE this book!! The first I ordered for myself and my friend enjoyed it as much as I did so I gave it to her and ordered another for myself!

Awesome revelation!

Written from the heart....Mr. Engle's call to this fast makes sense. The book opens our eyes to the character of Jesus - His amazing strength, obedience and the brilliant plan of God to put Satan in his place. Awesome revelation! A must read for those who long to be more like Jesus and to witness the Kingdom of Heaven on earth.

I had done my first 40 day fast several months ago and so I was interested in what the Holy Soirit would speak to me via this book. The truths in this book validated my fast! I highly recommend this book!

Inspiring and practical read!

If you want to rethink how you spend your time, in order to pursue work that matters, then read this book. Jocelyn helps us understand why we're so addicted to email, and then shares steps we can take to break out of it. She even provides templates to help us write more effective emails. Once you start this book, you won't be able to put it down. And, even better, you'll walk away with at least three things you can do right now to get out of your inbox and back to work that matters.

Tame your greatest time suck so you can do important things again

In these info overloaded days, a book should not be any longer than is necessary, and this book is also mercifully short saving us and the author time and hits the point immediately. Much of the techniques stated in the book, you may already know, but to be put into a concentrated form and delivered with urgency and concision, just might get you to take action to tame your inbox this time. Two of the biggest benefits to me personally, so far, have been to set up VIP inboxes and to give up the unachievable goal of "Inbox Zero". I felt my life improve almost immediately afterwards and asked myself "Why didn't I do this sooner?" The parts about email etiquette didn't help me as much, but they are still excellent advice. This book is well worth the attention you give to it, and I think the writer has great respect for the busy modern reader. Recommended!

A quick read over a few evenings, Unsubscribe gives the sort of actionable advice that's a trademark of Glei's past 99u work. Much is common sense, smack-yourself-in-the-forehead-why-didn't-I-realize-this-before? advice, but here it's concisely organized and geared toward truly improving your communication.

The pragmatic "Cheat Sheets" in the closing chapter give clear examples of the psychology, strategy, and style points she covers in the first three chapters and put you on an immediate path toward better email. This is the user manual that should have come with every email application.

Great overall, but missing some planets from Rebels and Rogue One

My boys enjoy the book, but I was a little disappointed. It has major planets from OT, PT, The Clone Wars, Rebels and TFA. It shows the location of Lothal, Jedha, Starkiller Base, Jakku and Takodana, but it doesn't show Scarif, Atollon, Eadu, Lah'mu or Wobani. Overall not bad, love the chornological order of events and art but wished it included those planets. The missing planets are all in the Outer Rim, except Wobani which is said to be in the Mid Rim. Kids still love the book.

Fantastic book for any young Star Wars fan

My 6 year old son LOVES this book! It is huge, and the illustrations are beautiful. He will sit and look through the book for almost an hour, finding new details to point out to me each time. This is a great book for (an hour of quiet time) for any young Star Wars fan.

Sears, a biochemist, crowns years' worth of research into the effects of food on hormone production and metabolic activity with a program that will lead to "optimal health," peak performance (the zone of the title) and, not incidentally, weight control. Citing the importance of eicosanoids, a class of hormones that figures critically in metabolism, Sears has worked out an approach to eating that reduces one's daily production of insulin and, at the same time, draws on stored body fat for energy. A formula for calculating an individual's Lean Body Mass is tied to an estimated Physical-Activity Factor and used to establish one's daily protein requirement, which can easily be as much as 70 grams for a moderately active, middle-aged woman with 25-35% body fat. One Diet Does Not Fit All--Although Great Portion Control!

Sears' premise is a relatively easy one to understand: eating protein with every meal helps to regulate your insulin output and hence helps the body avoid a constant craving for fattening carbohydrate intake.

I purchased this book when it first came out in 1995, used it on and off with adequate results, and was dismayed when various news magazines and dieticians panned the premise. I thought, how could regulating hormones NOT be involved in the dieting puzzle?

Recently I was reaquainted with Sears' ideas after seeing an alternative physician in my quest for better health. The doctor recommended using Sears hormone-regulating formula and portion guidelines with Peter D'Adamo's ER4YT Blood Type Diet. So far, I have had fairly good overall health-benefit results--and this with no intention of losing weight--although this has occurred.

Although Sears comes off as being a little too commercial for my taste--just check out the Zoneperfect website and you will be bombarded with all sorts of prepackaged goodies--- his premise of eating a certain amount and a certain combination of the three basic nutritional elements seems to be quite wise. In a nutshell, one's hand is utilized to decide just how much one needs to put away during one meal. The protein should be the size of one's palm--thickness taken into account. The fat is represented by the size of the fleshy part of the thumb--about a tablespoon. Carbohydrates are monitored in this way: if eating a grain, a closed fist-sized amount should be consumed. If eating a green vegetable, two handfuls are advised.
As much as I find this advice feasible, I have some criticism with regard to Sears' premise and format. Firstly most of the recipes in the book seemed to be geared for bachelors who have little time for food preparation. Anyone wanting to make a Zone meal for a family would be pretty much out of luck if using the book as a guideline. The good news here is that the website provides many many recipes to help balance out those fats, proteins and carbs and there is an Excel based tool offered online at no-cost which actually calculates a meal's components down to the gram---if you want to get that specific. Secondly, Sears reports that one could lose weight with any combination, although he suggests for example that red meat and butter are poor choices when compared to other protein and fat choices. I believe that since this book has been written,Sears has come out with other "breakthrough" diets--one revolving around soy and one around Omega-3 fats. I can only charitably think that as his theories evolve more books will ensue. But, what he doesn't seem to cover is the fact that some people simply do not do well when eating certain foods. His one-size fits all diet, does not work for everyone. There is a dieting stall reached after awhile and the optimum results that he proports one will achieve are not achieved. Case in point, when I started the Zone vigorously, 3 years ago, I found that I had to incorporate more protein with every meal. I turned to dairy as I did not feel inclined to cook a chicken breast each and every time I wanted a snack. Unfortunately, no matter what Sears says, I do not metabolize dairy well and I found that no matter how many glasses of water I drank, no matter how many fish oil capsules I consummed, or how simple and abundant my carbohydrates were, I was still constipated. After adding a fiber supplement, I found I no longer lost weight--but stayed at a plateau for so long a period of time, I eventually tried another dieting plan. After all, no one feels well if their digestive system is no working correctly. Sears speaks of the digetive hormones, but he neglects to mention the changing hormonal interplay of estrogen and progesterone in women, especially as they get older. Nevertheless, I believe that Sears book can be the cornerstone for many who do not understand that food must be balanced to achieve a hormonally balanced body. In the same sense, in order to be a certain size, you must eat a certain amount. My advise is to use this as your springboard, then decide which combinations work best for you, perhaps, as my physician advised,try the D'Adamo blood type diet as a guideline for foods one should and shouldn't eat. I have found that since doing this, I no longer need my fiber supplement, I have lost weight, I do feel better. (Oddly enough, for my type A blood, I am to gorge myself on soy products and Omega-3 rich fish! Sounds like Dr. Sears may be a blood type A himself as his latest books plug both as highly beneficial.) Bottom line: if I feel better, I must be on the right track.

It worked for me.

I read 'The Zone' and followed what he said. I lost 20 pounds in less than 3 months and have maintained my weight for 1 month. My biggest surprise was the outstanding decrease in my cholesterol/HDL ratio, tested through work. My ratio dropped from 6.24 to 3.2 in 4 months (doctors want it less than 4.0). I eat like he says and exercise like he says, except I do eat ice cream at night frequently. I try to ride a stationary bike every 3 or 4 days. I do not feel I am dieting. I used to have orange juice and bananas for breakfast and was hungry before 11 am. Now I have 10 ounces of 1% milk, 1 oz peanuts, 1 oz cheese and crackers and eat lunch 45 minutes later than I used to. Peanuts remain in the stomach a long time and the fat content satisfies me. Instead of potatoes, I have broccoli, cauliflower, or green beans. I've talked enough. It worked for me. Good luck to you.

This diet works!

I recently got this book and have now read through it. As I read, it was very familiar to me! This is the diet that Bill Phillips recommends in his wildly popular Body for Life program which I followed several years ago with great results.

The Zone was created before Bill Phillips wrote his book, so Bill "borrowed" his recommendations from Dr. Sears!

My experience with The Zone is based on what I learned from Bill Phillips. However, The Zone has a much more thorough explanation and better guidelines for following the program. I would recommend using both Body for Life and The Zone to get the best results.

Here are some observations based on my experience with this program:

1) As with any diet, it only works if you follow it.

2) It can be followed with good results by using the palm of you hand to gauge portions as explained by Dr. Sears (and by Bill Phillips). Or you can follow it exactly with food scales and exact food selection for the best results.

3) If you are following it properly and consuming the right amounts of food, you will not get hungry. If you get hungry, you either had too much carbohydrate at the last meal or your protein portion sizes are not large enough.

4) You will get excellent results if this is combined with weight and cardio training as prescribed by Bill Phillips. Be sure to increase the protein amounts according to your increased activity level.

5) In addition to weight loss, you will gain massive amounts of energy and a solid feeling of well-being.
