GREAT book!

As a newer paramedic I often found myself wishing I was better at differential diagnosis. Progressing through my career I've learned things through experience and sometimes wished I could learn more about diagnosing what's going on with my patients prior to coming across it in the field and just making an educated guess. This book is full of very good information about how very specific conditions will present to you. I purchased it to take the AMLS class and would definitely recommend not only this purchase, but the class to any EMS providers out there!

Excellent!

I am a paramedic in Texas and I work for 911 in a large, multi-demographic population. This book expanded my knowledge and gave me more clinical "tools" to assess and treat my patients. I would recommend this book and class offered by NAEMT.

This is truly an incredible resource for any baker, newbie to experienced. I have followed Miriam's blog (@overtimecook) for years and her recipes are always amazing. They are well written, clear, and do not use hard to find ingredients. Some blog favourites are in the new full color cookbook (special mention has to go to the Lemon Cheesecake Mousse Cups, they are divine and grace the sweet table at every event I have made since trying them), but its mostly full of new and exciting recipes. I have only had the cookbook for a week and Ive already enjoyed so many recipes. The Snickerdoodle bundt cake was absolutely perfect, as was the Caramel Apple Bundt. My family loved the Caramel Pie, and Cookie Dough Fudge Pie. An added feature is the library of glazes and frostings in the book, allowing you to make any recipe and customize it with the perfect glaze. Miriam also offers you tips about ingredients, kitchen tools, and planning ahead. I helped recipe test for this cookbook and can tell you how incredible these recipes are, I can also say that Miriam had the recipes tested and then listened to the feedback from her testers. These recipes are tried and true and Im sure you'll love them, who wouldn't love Something Sweet?

About the Author
Mark Ladner opened Del Posto with Mario Batali and Joe and Lidia Bastianich in the fall of 2005. Intimidating but Impressive

What the cookbook is/does well: clear, concise directions for authentic, complex Italian recipes
What the cookbook is not: 30 minute meals or recipes made with packaged, processed foods
Who this book is best suited for: the advanced home cook/lover of The Del Posto Restaurant
Three words to sum it up: Intimidating but impressive.

When I opened the mailing envelope and pulled out The Del Posto Cookbook by Chef Mark Ladner, I was struck by the cover. There is a photograph of a remarkable spread of greens and grains, pasta and pig’s head. It reminded me of something I had seen before. Was I reminded of a retro-colored spread from a 1960’s cookbook? A still life painting from the 17th century? As I flipped through the pages, the artwork unfolded in not only the photographs but the way each dish was plated.

While admiring the elegant plating and reading about the cookbook’s upscale namesake (which I’ve never visited), I couldn’t help but wonder—how on earth was I to make these recipes in my kitchen? The one with the glass top stove, periwinkle laminate countertops, and a handful of cooking gadgets.

Mario Batali wrote in his foreword, “Ladner’s cooking is decidedly low-tech, which makes it quite simple to translate into the home kitchen.” This didn’t really jive with what I was seeing and reading. Low tech maybe, but I doubted the promise of easy translation when I looked at the pages-long recipes of 100 Layer Lasagne al Ragu Bolognese, Warm Cotechino with Lentils and Prosecco Zabaglione, and Veal Braciole.

I doubted it so much, I flipped back to the introduction, written by Chef Ladner himself, in hopes he could shed a little light or explain how these recipes could possibly ‘translate’ to my kitchen. And he gave me an answer: “While the recipes may seem long and intimidating, we have worked tirelessly to cover every detail of their process so that you can successfully make our food in your kitchen.”

The recipes within the Del Posto Cookbook do translate to any home kitchen. You just have to work for them, with the promise of a 5 star bite, or meal, or dessert at the end. I can attest to this because I tested Lidia [Bastianich]’s Jota with Smoky Pork and Braised Kale.

I was skeptical. Though I don’t buy processed foods or even prepped airmailed meals, I am not one to devote a day of my life cooking one thing unless it’s largely hands-off. This particular recipe looked the most appealing because it was one of the most accessible, it had ingredients that I had a hankering for, and it afforded me the opportunity to practice my newly acquired pork-smoking skills. I went through the steps, I didn’t take short cuts (namely, I fed my Weber grill with coals and wood chips for hours), and the end result? An incredibly dynamic, wholesome, I-can’t-believe-I-just-cooked-that-in-my-kitchen dish. The cannellini bean soup (jota) was silky and smooth. How it got that much flavor with so few ingredients (carrots, onion, celery, water, bay leaves, olive oil) is beyond me. The pork. Oh, the pork. The lightly sweet, abundantly peppery rub meshed beautifully with the perfectly smoked, juicy shoulder. These two key players, coupled with braised kale, bacon, and sauerkraut were incredible.

It reminded me of home, of smoked pork and collard greens with vinegar. Yet it reminded of a place worlds away, too, for a reason I can’t quite put my finger on. That pretty much sums up the theme of this cookbook in every way, from the moment I saw the photograph on the cover to studying the recipes within: it’s freshly sophisticated with a hint of familiarity.

I never thought I’d make something quite this dynamic in my little kitchen with the glass top stove and the periwinkle countertops. But I did. And I think any cook, if able to give the time, will be blown away with what they can make at home with guidance from Chef Ladner.

Great Coffee Table Book: Not such a great kitchen book

I'm an experience Italian cook, and have been making pasta, pizza, and other Italian foods from scratch for 25 years. While this book is beautiful, and would make a great coffee table book, it's not a book for the home cook. Forget that many of the ingredients could only be sourced in places like NYC and SFO, but the steps and processes are just a bit much. I returned it.

It does one thing very well

An easy-read, yet through guide to silicone RTV molding and resin casting. It's a solid book for beginner to intermediate level people. If you cast stuff for a living and have years of experience, this book probably won't reveal anything all that new to you.

EXPERT MOLD MAKING & resin casting

It has the look of a self-published craft book.

There is a lot about mold making, but much less about casting.

Also, I bought the book specifically to find out best practices for casting resin using plaster molds.

No love on that topic in this book.

The book confines itself to silicone rubber mould-making and polyurethane casting, which limits its applicability. it appears to be one person's experience of a limited range of work but no doubt it could be useful to someone facing similar requirements.

Warm, rich and honest collection

Anyone wishing to know what the great Elisabeth Kubler-Ross was like as a human being and a mensch will be very moved to joy and tears by reading through the fifty-one contributions in this book. The writers of the essays range from her son Ken to Muhammad Ali to Caroline Myss to Marianne Williamson to Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York to Raymond Moody and many other good people. Pillars of the end-of-life movement and the hospice and palliative care field share reminiscences of the extremely hard working wunderkind and down-to-earth saint. No baloney. It is well worth the investment. Read it a little at a time whenever you can or whenever you need a lift. It is a great bedside reader, at night or early to rise. Savor this woman's grand purpose and set your own a bit straighter.

Worthy in-depth memories of EKR. Moved me to tears several times.

I was one of the lucky folks who knew EKR quite well...between
the early l990's and her death. I had many cups of tea with her,
spent nights in her home, etc.
This book brought back many memories..the shopping trips, the
humor, the anger, the brilliance, and the sheer power of her being.
Even though I was working all weekend when I got it, I couldn't
put it down until I'd read very word. (I introduced the 51st chapter author to EKR so received it as a gift. But its well
worth the cover price.)
Whether you knew her or not, this wonderful book brings one of the greatest women of our time to life in a down-to-earth approachable style.
I think Elisabeth would have liked it.
Its not a "phony baloney." Its the real thing.
Hats off to her son, and other friends who took on the project and brought it to completion.
A treasure of a book. I'm 2000 miles away, and would love to
go to the book signing in Arizona. Prudence wins out, but I'd
love to be there!

About the Author
Dr. Michelle "Shelley" McGuire teaches in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Washington State University. She is the author of several published articles, and specializes in the research of understanding of how breastfeeding and lactation influence both maternal and child health and well-being. Recent research has focused on investigating how maternal diet influences milk fat content and, thus, energy intake and fatty acid consumption of the breastfeeding child. Dr. McGuire has been teaching the basic nutrition course for several years and has a strong appreciation of the course, its goals and objectives, and the variety of student needs. This experience coupled with her strong writing and research background has helped her create an exciting and refreshing text for the introductory nutrition course.

Dr. Beerman teaches in the School of Biological Sciences at Washington State University. She is the author of several published articles assessing the impact of bioactive components in soy (isoflavones) on health parameters in menopausal women. More recently, she has been studying the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia in rural, impoverished regions of Guatemala, and efficacy of a novel approach to improve iron status in women and children. Dr. Beerman teaches the 300-level nutrition course for health-related majors (Nutrition, Health, and Disease), as well as courses related to women's health (Biology of Women). She also teaches a course in teaching methodology (Teaching Methods in Higher Education) for graduate students. Since joining the faculty at Washington State University in 1989, she has taught more than 12,000 students and has been the recipient of several college and university teaching awards. Dr. Beerman's years of teaching experience, combined with her wide knowledge base in nutrition, health sciences and educational pedagogy, has helped create this innovative introductory nutrition text.

I would not have rented this if I had known that the code would not work. Now I have to purchase a code separately. Absolutely unacceptable. Change the title of this listing.

The book was in good condition but the online access was useless. you are no longer able to use the card. I would never have rented the book had I known this. I ended up having to purchase another access card then dropping the class because it took so long to get it. I was very disappointed with this rental.

The party never ends on the Las Vegas strip but neither does the danger. Officer Everly is new to the beat, having recently relocated to Vegas from Los Angeles. Foot patrol on the Strip is a demanding assignment because he’s up close and personal with the public. But what he’d really like to do is get up close and personal with Station 32’s hunky fireman, Trent Marshall.

Trent has been a fireman for over ten years and is dedicated to his job. He’s built tough and is a no-nonsense man of few words. At a local blood drive, Trent meets the handsome new officer on foot patrol but won’t let himself get too close. He’s lost love before when his policeman lover was killed in the line of fire.

During an emergency, Trent’s over-protective instincts kick in when he believes Shawn is in harm’s way. He ends up embarrassing and angering Shawn in front of their fellow officers, which seems as though it will end any hope of Trent having a chance with the young man he can’t push from his mind. Shawn can’t decide whether he wants to punch or kiss Trent. Kissing wins. Once they spend some time together away from the stresses of their jobs, they find that they’re not just compatible—they’re combustible.

But Trent can’t seem to accept that there are hazards that come with working in law enforcement. Right as they’re discovering how much they mean to one another, the danger escalates on the Strip. Hot First Responders!

Excellent fast paced read. I love firemen and policemen and stories involving them. I like how there was a deeper thread than just the two guys hooking up. It made the story more interesting. It had me guessing throughout the book and that held my interest. I'm reading for the next one in the series!

A good read.

How can I resist a story about a cop and a firefighter? Written by Morticia Knight, this is not the usual read about such men. Yes, there is romance. Yes, there is erotica (really HOT! you guys and gals!!!) and Yes, there is the drama of the suspense of a mystery the men had to help solve: the emergence of a hate-filled cult movement ironically called The Citizens Against Immorality.

Set in Sin City, Trent is a firefighter who had worked hard to get to where he was at now. He was respected, and he was a friend. He was also out and proud. The only thing that marred his reputation was his stoicism. He was a quiet man who never really showed how he felt or what he felt. His best friend from grade school knew him, though and that friend knew Trent was finally able to move on from his grieving. You see, Trent had lost the love of his life no thanks to a senseless crime. As a cop, his lover served and lost his life in the line of duty. Now that Trent was finally able to move on, the only thing in the way was that Shawn Everly was a cop, too.

Shawn had moved from LA because he needed not only to have a less stressful cop life dealing with the gangs of said city, but he also needed to get away from his family who barely tolerated him. Moving to Las Vegas was a decision he had thought about long and hard. Working in this land of lights was not as stressful, but he did have to deal with a lot of groping, women in barely there wear, men glittering gold, and a firefighter who set his blood to boil.

There is angst, there is drama, there is action, mystery and thrill. This is a complete package that reads fast with a high entertainment value. Although Trent did surprise me a bit as the story developed but it was a surprise I really wanted to happen. This man needed to heal and he did it through sheer force of will and facing up to his demons. Loving Shawn was difficult for his fears that this man may be violently taken away from him, just like before, was eating at him. The way both men approached the healing, now that was the part I really loved. There were no miracles happening here, there were no instant gratifications. And that for me, is what makes a good read.

Good Reading

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas where the party never ends and danger lurks around every corner. Enter Officer Shawn Everly, a recent transfer to the LVMPD and assigned to foot patrol along the infamous Strip. When a drunk decides to take a dip in the lake at the Bellagio, Shawn comes face to face with the man he’s been dreaming of for months – fireman Trent Marhsall. Will sparks fly or will the two first responders fizzle out?

Shawn Everly is what I like in a man. He’s stable, he’s gorgeous, and he’s just alpha enough to get things done, but not so alpha that you want to kick him in the shin every time he opens his mouth. Considering he’s a cop, that last bit is a huge surprise. I love that he’s able to take the teasing, harassing, and everything else his partner and coworkers throw at him in stride. It says a lot about his character that he didn’t shoot any of them, especially after the embarrassing incident at the beginning of the story. He’s the exact kind of partner that Trent needs.

Now Trent Marshall, on the other hand, is a bit too alpha for my tastes. However, as you begin to become privy to his backstory, you begin to understand why he acts like he does. His overprotective streak borders on obsessiveness at times and it can be a real turn off. Thankfully, Shawn helps him come to terms with the loss of his former boyfriend, who was also a police officer. Once Shawn begins to cope with that, his domineering attitude loosens up somewhat, making him much more likable.

I will admit that as a local of this odd town, I was looking for inconsistencies or errors and I am happy to report that I didn’t find any. That always impresses me because it’s too easy to choose a city and make it up as you go along, but in this case, I was able to easily picture where Shawn and Trent were at all times. The author obviously did her research and it shows.

All Fired Up is an extremely sexy and sweet story about two first responders who can’t get enough of each other. It’s a very real example of how hard it is to work as either a police officer or fireman and how much harder it is to love someone who is either. It’s a great introduction into a new series and I can’t wait to see what Ms. Knight has in store for us next.
