About the Author
For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student's perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience, along with stories from the field-including those of former students, now in health careers-that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her texts and laboratory manuals are known. In her ongoing commitment to students and her realization of the challenges they face, Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women returning to college after a hiatus or who are attending college for the first time and would otherwise be unable to continue with their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. MariebScience Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and generously contributed to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory that bears her name. In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor. Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings "InterActive Physiology�" CD-ROM series, and is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS). "Anatomy & Physiology," Second Edition is the latest expression of her commitment to student needs in their pursuit of the study of A&P.

Book Package came with everything that was needed

I have seen a few comments/questions regarding what is included with this textbook. I am hoping I can clear up some confusion. I just received the "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)". This package came with the Human Anatomy & Physiology textbook, A Brief Atlas of the Human Body, Interactive Physiology 10-System Suite (CD ROM), and the Student Access Code for Mastering A&P. If you need the whole package, this is the one to order. Also, it is important to note that the textbook comes 3-holed punched and you will have to put the pages in a 3-ringed binder. This book does not have a binding. I personally like this idea because if I know that we are going to be working on chapters 2 and 3 in class, then I only have to bring chapters 2 and 3 to class. I don't have to lug around the whole book. Also, it might be important to note that I ordered this book directly from Amazon and not from someone who is using Amazon to sell their book.

If you order the hardcover book, you will only receive the textbook. The hardcover book (at the time of this review) does not come with the Atlas, CD ROM, or the Access Code.

When you read reviews, make sure to look at the review carefully to see exactly which book/package is being reviewed. When you look at the reviews for "Human Anatomy & Physiology" it will show reviews from people who received the hardcover book, the kindle book, and the 3-holed punched book. These reviews are all mixed together. The review will tell you exactly which book/package is being reviewed. Personally I think this makes it very confusing but if you look carefully you will find the information you need.

I have just noticed that Amazon is now selling a loose leaf edition without the full package. When ordering make sure you order "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)" if you need the full package. If it doesn't list "Mastering A&P with eText - Access Card Package" in the title then you are not going to receive the full package. Also, it seems like Amazon is making it more difficult to actually find this full package. If you search for just "Human Anatomy & Physiology", this full package is not going to come up in the search. However, if you copy and paste the full title: "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)", you should be able to find the correct package. I hope you find what you need.

Now that I have started my class that uses this book, I can now comment on using the Loose Leaf version vs a Hardcover book. Overall I do like that I can take a few chapters to class versus taking the whole book. Its much lighter and I enjoy that. The only bad thing I have found about having the loose leaf version is that you have to be more careful with the pages. The whole book is 3 holed punched and needs to be put in a 3 ring binder. When turning the pages, if you aren't careful, you can tear one or two of the holes on a page. It's usually nothing a little tape couldn't correct but if you are the kind of person who is rough on their books, turns pages aggressively, throws their books across the room, then you might want to invest in the hard cover book.

Not much difference between editions

I used the previous (7th) edition and got an "A" in my online Anatomy and Physiology class. From what I could tell, there was no difference between the cheaper 7th edition and the ridiculously priced 8th edition except for the picture on the cover!

I gave the book three stars because it was unclear and lacked details in so many areas that it left me confused. I had to clarify a lot of issues by looking them up online.

I resold my book after I was finished with it for the same amount of money I paid for it so all it cost me was the initial shipping fee.

FYI - I quit buying books at my campus bookstore after the first semester and have saved over $1000.00 so far, just by buying used, previous editions.

The latest ploy these unscrupulous bookstores use is to package up a bunch of useless items with the necessary textbook and sell the "bundle" at an outrageous price. It is criminal.

I always ask the instructors before hand what other materials are required and if I can use the previous edition. 99 percent of the time they tell me the ONLY thing I need is the textbook and the previous edition is OK. Occasionally a professor will insist on the current edition and I still save a ton of money buying it used on Amazon.com. When I am finished, I re-sell them and usually get all my money back!

We need to get the word out about the college bookstore textbook scams! It is an OUTRAGE!

I have a very particular professor, and she only uses this textbook. It is very informational, and is laid out in a very neat format so you can find practically anything you'll need to study for. The charts and illustrations are very well made and are very informative. This is a book I plan on keeping for graduate school.

Steven McKinnon is an independent writer living, eating and just about breathing in Glasgow.

Steven completed two courses of Creative Writing at the University of Glasgow in 2010, and completed an HNC in Professional Writing Skills at Reid Kerr College in 2006. He is 29, and was born in the bathroom of a high-rise flat in Glasgow on the 18th of March 1986.

He has since moved out.

Engaging and witty romp through the troubled sex life of a socially awkward kidult

Now, this is really something different. I found it via the blog of a fellow indie author.

Boldly Going Nowhere might be fiction or might be a strange sort of autobiography. In his foreword McKinnon claims it is both: a sort of fictionalised truth. Steven (ie the character in the book rather than the author, though they might be one and the same) is the archetypal young adult of today who spends every spare moment absorbed in his PlayStation, eating junk food and hanging out with friends, the perennial kidult still a teenager at twenty-five -- an age when his grandparents might have been flying Spitfires or struggling up the beaches of Normandy with Nazi bullets zipping past their ears. I suppose that’s progress of a sort. No offence, Steven, just saying…

But as if that’s not enough to make the old codgers amongst us huff and tut and mutter about the state of today’s youth Steven presents himself as a twenty-something male virgin struggling to find a relationship, who imagines all his friends are perfectly at ease with life and suffer none of his awkwardness around girls. He also has what corporate-speak-fluent young folk these days call Issues with some friends, that must be dealt with somehow.

I don’t know how near all this comes to a typical life experience for a young person these days, but to me Boldly Going Nowhere certainly carries the ring of truth between its lines, especially if we allow that more truth may be conveyed in fiction than in a self-righteous style of autobiography, which this is not. In this thoroughly engaging and witty romp through the troubled life of a socially awkward kidult much of the action is set in Glasgow or thereabouts, and the style is modern, humorous and refreshing, including one chapter that consists of just three very important words. I’ll leave you to discover what they are.

Does Steven get the girl in the end? Does he successfully negotiate the mine-strewn waters of friendships on the rocks? I won’t spoil it by telling you here but I thoroughly enjoyed this read which will, if you’re inclined to harbour a jaundiced view of today’s youth, lift the spirits and restore some faith in a section of society that might sometimes appear appallingly shallow.

My verdict: 99p well spent. Give it a go, especially if you happen to be a grumpy old codger or a desperate twenty-something male virgin. Speaking personally, having read Boldly Going Nowhere, I still wouldn’t give anybody under the age of thirty the vote though…

Snarky grown-up coming of age.

This is a fun, light read about a guy going through changes in life. A sort of snarky coming-of-age when the narrator should already know better. I'd call it Guy-lit.

You begin to dislike the narrator as he's so arrogant and judgemental. Breaking the barriers between writer and reader is never a good idea and fails here as you want to slap the narrator and shout shut up. This reads like something written for a creative writing course.

Excellent book for neural network developers

I have searched extensively for practical books on neural networks, but did not find any that were good for practical use. I want to program them myself, so that they are easier to adapt to future developments.
But recently I found 2 good books. These are written by Marsland en Samarasinghe respectively. In both books neural networks are clearly explained and both use hand computation examples. For programmers of neural networks these books are ideal. A must if you look for practical books.

Great book!

I found Dr. Samarasinghe's very easy to understand yet very comprehensive in its coverage of neural networks. The hand calculations really helped me see how the algorithms are applied to real-world problems. This is one of the best books on the subject that I own, and I own a bunch of them. I highly recommend it!

Pretty Good

I've read a lot of data mining, statistical, and/or computer programming books. I've also read a lot of the scientific literature in the subject area. This is well-written, well-organized, and very clear in terms of communication of information. I've read way too many books in this area that forget that the main point is to actually communicate information effectively, and/or get muddled up in details or fail to explain things from start to finish, don't define concepts, use equations with poorly defined symbology, etc. This is definitely not one of those. I've found it to actually be an enjoyable and enlightening read, which you don't often say for technical books. In my opinion, this is a very well done book.

Combining many headline cases in one book is always a plus and the length of each story is about right. Maybe just a few too many toward the end but read in bunches informative and entertaining. Great booklet and linked spreadsheet, read it through first though before working on spreadsheet.

Very good on doing on analysing an apartment of 5+ units. What caused me to give it 3 stars instead of 5 is the booklet description of the spreadsheet does not quite match the spreadsheet the booklet has a link for the reader to view. However I was able to follow the linked spreadsheet, but ended up with two spreadsheets. My recommendation is to read the entire booklet and download or recreate the spreadsheet and go through the booklet again.

I hope the author will change the booklet to match the spreadsheet as the spreadsheet is excellent.

J Scott does it again! A simplified and strait forward book on analyzing investment properties. This book lays everything on the table, yet gets straight to the point. I highly recommend J's books on flipping houses as well.

That was a bad decision because the final exam contained many of the ...

This book was helpful to get through the class. Although the class didn't follow the book, the examples provided in the book helped me pass the class THE FIRST TIME. (Most of my class stopped reading the book when they noticed the instructor didn't follow it. That was a bad decision because the final exam contained many of the sample questions taken directly from the book.) It also helped me pass the National Exam.

Basic and Simple

I bought this book for phlebotomy class (as it was required). Book is easy-to-read and simple to understand. I expected this book to have more information about phlebotomy but instead it covers more information suited to a beginning medical assistant student. As a seasoned RN interested in the academic study of phlebotomy (and not just what I've learned on the job), this book doesn't help me with the questions I have nor does it provide help for my in-class exams. I'm looking for a test prep guide that will better prepare me to take my certification exam in the next month.
