Great Fun for Even the Littlest Doctor Who Fan

Not long ago a book called Where's the Doctor? came out that harkened back to the Where's Waldo? books. Filled with aliens of all sorts from the Doctor Who universe, you could search for the Doctor, the TARDIS, Amy and Rory in page after page of pictures. My kids and I had great fun with it.

Now we have a sequel--When's the Doctor? This one takes us to various periods of time that the Doctor has visited both terrestrial--Ancient Egypt, Victorian London, the Aztecs--and alien--New Earth, TARDIS graveyard, Metebelis III. Once again we have to find the Doctor, the TARDIS, Amy and Rory, along with some special figures you can find at the end of the book.

Once again, the kids and I had great fun with this book. In fact, though the artwork is again wonderful, it seems a little less "busy" than the previous book, making it a bit easier for my little ones to be successful in their searches. So, for the littlest Doctor Who fans out there, this one might be a better place to start.

making everything easy to find

Where's Waldo this is not. The book is relatively cheap in quality in terms of materials. There are relatively few scenes in which to find things. The characters in the pictures are too large, making everything easy to find. In addition, it feels like the characters/people in the scenes are copy and pasted dozens of time to fill up the pictures. It was amusing and sad to spot the exact same Greek or Roman soldier in the same stance (some of them reversed) all over the picture.

This was slightly better than Where's the Doctor? overall.

I refuse to give this product a good review just because it is Doctor Who themed. If you are going to buy this, keep your expectations in check. If my wife didn't like Doctor Who so much, I would consider returning this.

I bought this as a Christmas present for my son who LOVES Doctor Who. It's a pretty fun take on the "Where's Waldo" type of books. We had a lot of fun on Christmas morning looking for The Doctor, Amy, Rory and The TARDIS!

This second collection of Adler's papers precedes the material found in the previous collection (Stella Adler on Ibsen, Strindberg and Chekov, LJ 4/15/99), ending as she begins text analysis. Here Kissel (David Merrick) has taken tapes, transcriptions, notebooks, and other sources to reconstruct an acting course in 22 lessons. What results is Adler at her strongest. Coming from a theatrical family and having studied with Stanislavsky, she became an old-fashioned autocratic teacher determined to pass on the best that she knows. She was certainly the best of her generation. The lessons are graduated from very basic matters to quite complex issues of textual analysis and decorum. Though mostly monologs, they include enough exercises and student responses to get the flavor of Adler's work. Some themes run through these classes: American culture is bankrupt, Lee Strasberg got Stanislavsky wrong, and class and its formality must be learned in order to do major plays through the realist period. When Adler died in 1992, the theater lost a great teacher, whose depth of experience alone made her invaluable. Daughter of one of the greats of Yiddish theater, Jacob Adler, she studied with Stanislavski, was a founder of the Group Theater and appeared in many of its seminal productions, married the brilliant critic Harold Clurman (they later divorced), and after the Group Theater folded, founded an acting school that rivaled Lee Strasberg's. But she never wrote a book about her theories and techniques. This collection, culled from sound recordings of her at work, at least re-creates the feel of her classes. Editor Kissel deserves great credit for shaping what could have been a chaotic collage of pronouncements into a coherent whole. The book's 22 lively chapters detail Adler's techniques for preparing her students for a life on the stage. Theater aficionados will appreciate Adler's discussion of modern plays and her belief that acting is a rare, privileged profession, and young actors will benefit from the many acting exercises sprinkled throughout the text. Best Book for Changing Your Self Image!

This book changed my life! I never write reviews but felt inspired to write one for this book. It was recommended to me by Bob Proctor and another one of his coaches. I kept asking for a way to change my self-image so that I could lose the extra 10 pounds I wanted to get rid of and they highly recommended this book.

After reading the first 5 chapters I was so amazed. The most important thing I learned was that I could use my imagination to act as my ideal self and therefore create it.

I imagine all the time being a fabulous, stylish, slender Queen as well as everything around me. I imagine wearing the stylish clothes, eating slowly and with delicate, fancy silverware on gold lined royal plates with high-quality, artfully designed foods. I sit like a Queen, I walk like a Queen, I even drive my car like a Queen. Just totally elegant, confident, beautiful and like I am so important and lucky. And it's so fun!

As silly as it sounds — it totally works! I barely have food cravings or overeat. I feel so much more confident in myself. I feel like I honor and respect myself more. And definitely a whole lot happier :)

Highly recommend this book not just for acting but if you want to change the way you think about yourself. And to change negative habits, thoughts, and self-sabotaging behavior.

Acting Life

The classic. If you want to act, get this book, read it, do the exercises, practice them and just go for it. Even if you do not wish to act on stage or screen, and you simply want to make of your life a better experience -- more valuable and enriching for yourself and others -- then read this book and do the exercises. If you want a different story for yourself, a richer life, a more profound journey on this planet, read this book and do the exercises.
This book is about life. Acting is her way of talking about a cool excellent approach to living.

Beautiful and epic, but maybe too much so at times.

The Art of Acting is a great book on the subject of acting written by one of the premier acting teachers of the 20th century. Adler's book is inspirational, powerful, and profound. She explains, in great detail, various actions the actor may be called upon to perform on stage and leads her students through various exercises meant to connect the actor with the imagination and train themselves to realistically behave within the context of their character's background, costume, environment, social status, and culture. The only reason I gave this book four stars instead of five is that I feel it is not as use-able as some other acting books. Adler sometimes goes on (and on and on) describing the nature of some kind of action ("to reminiscence") or something and...what am I supposed to DO with that? It feels a lot like her interpretation (read opinion) of the nature of those things and how they should be played. Again, it just seemed to wax philosophical more than useful from time to time. There was also the advice "the actress does not sneeze on stage" to which I wanted to shout "COME ON Stella!"...my point is, again, if you want something really practical you should take a class while reading the book so it's easier to see how to use this information, and/or pick a different book. With all that said, she makes a lot of good points and is very powerful. The dignity she brings to acting is extraordinary and her emphasis on imagination is fascinating. I recommend this book to actors, directors, and anyone interested in theatre and acting. It's a beautiful book, and I intend to re-read it eventually. Hopefully I'll find more utility in a second reading.

Between the Acts takes place on a June 1939 day at Pointz Hall, the Oliver family's country house in the heart of England. In the garden, everyone from the village has gathered to present the annual pageant--scenes from the history of England, beginning with the Elizabethan Age and ending with "ourselves," the audience. As the story unfolds, the lives of the villagers also take shape. We learn of the strained relationship between Isa Oliver and her husband, Giles, discontented stockbroker and son of Bart Oliver, the owner of Pointz Hall. When a storm rushes in and hastens the completion of the play, the performers and the audience take their leave, and Giles and Isa are finally left alone. In its juxtaposition of interior life and social life, personal history and world history, Woolf’s final novel reveals the richness of what happens between the acts. 

Virginia Woolf (1882-1941), one of the major literary figures of the twentieth century, transformed the art of the novel. The author of numerous novels, collections of letters, journals, and short stories, she was an admired literary critic and a master of the essay form.

The book is absolutely wonderful, but the scan is terrible

The book is absolutely wonderful, but the scan is terrible. There are typos on almost every page, sometimes several. All they would have had to do is hire someone to read through the scan carefully and correct the most egregious errors, but instead they take $10 from each of us and deliver a defective product. This is really a problem, Amazon, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt! You need to clean up your act!

Wonderful views of the spectrum of English class and society just before World War II, including the famous mirror scene at the end. Her lyrical writing is much in evidence, and her spectrum is surprisingly broad in such a succinct novel.

Leslie Brubaker is Professor of Byzantine Art and Director of the Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies at the University of Birmingham, UK. A shorter account of much larger research, but so pared down that many will go on to the larger book anyway

In 2011, the Byzantinist Leslie Brubaker in collaboration with John Haldon wrote an ample monograph that sought to challenge the conventional account of the debate over icons between circa 650 and 850. For readers who are daunted by the price of that Cambridge University Press hardcover and its length of nearly a thousand pages, Brubaker went on to write this book for Bristol Classical Press. At only 134 pages, much of which is taken up with maps, Further Reading lists or illustrations, this is an altogether more approachable book on the subject and a motivated reader can finish it in one setting.

The prevailing understanding of Byzantine iconoclasm is that it was instigated by Leo III, it was a period of massive destruction across the Byzantine world, that it greatly divided society, that it was a period of artistic stagnation, and that its fiercest opponents were monks and, possibly, women. Brubaker claims that every single one of these assumptions of incorrect. For example, she makes a case that the classic account of iconoclasm starting with the emperor Leo III removing the icon of Christ from the palace gate is fictitious. It was his successor Constantine V who got the ball rolling against icons, but his only action was to convene a council to discuss the matter, and there is no evidence of actual destruction of images. One ought to look past writings from decades after, which can be seen as politically motivated smear campaigns, and hold that instead of true iconoclasm, there was a much calmer "iconomachy".

Some of the findings announced to the general public here are interesting, but as someone with more than a passing interest in this subject, I'm not entirely content with the book. So many details were brought up but quickly passed over that I feel like I have to get the author's BYZANTIUM IN THE ICONOCLAST ERA anyway. Plus, writing for a Western and thus mainly Roman Catholic or Protestant audience, Brubaker seems unwilling to get into the specifics of Orthodox belief. However, Byzantine society was so defensive about Christological positions, and the icon controversy played into that, that those theological minutiae must indeed be delved into in order to give the reader a full account of the subject. Still, the long bibliographies and Further Reading lists provide at least some consolation for a reader wanting more.

This is the short, more accessible and more affordable version of the massive and scholarly two-volumes published a few years ago by John Haldon and Leslie Brubaker. The subject and purpose of this little book by Leslie Brubaker, released in 2012, are similar. It is explicitly targeted at the so-called “general reader” although it is written and structured in such a way that it more generally of use for any type of “beginner”, including first or second year undergraduates, with references listed and annotated at the end of each chapter, for instance.

The subject is the debate and controversy over icons in the Byzantine Empire between about 680 and 850 or “iconoclasm”, to use what the author shows to be a modern term that the contemporaries never used themselves. The purpose is to discuss, challenge and dispute what has become commonly held views, and to show to what extent these views are derived from and have been influenced by what the author has termed Byzantine spin. In other words, the author seeks to demonstrate that history has - once again – been largely rewritten by the victors or, at least, that it has been deliberately recast after the facts to fit political Byzantine agendas and serve particular interests. She also seeks to demonstrate

Specifically, the author seek to demonstrate that there is little evidence, and, in some cases, perhaps no real evidence that back a number of statements that have become “received knowledge.” These start with the view that Byzantine iconoclasm was instigated by Leo III, that it deeply divided society and lead to violent persecutions and that it was largely opposed by monks and women which were deeply - and supposedly more - attached to the worshiping of icons.

I will not explain the various arguments put forward here (and once again) to explain why all of these assumptions are incorrect. However, one of the main interests of this book is to show that the portrait that is shown of iconoclasm is essentially a very biased one. This is becomes it comes essentially from their enemies, with many of the iconoclast sources not having survived the struggle. It was largely (although not entirely and perhaps not quite as much as the author claims) developed after the end of the crisis. In particular, she demonstrates to what extent many of the holy lives of presumed “martyrs” of iconoclasm were written after the events and painted as victims of religious persecutions people which probably were also plotting to unseat the incumbent Emperor.

A related benefit is to show the essential ambiguities surrounding the different 6and not necessarily related) phases of the struggle over almost a century and a half. There was a religious dimension and it may not have been only or mainly about purity of dogma but about religious power and control over the faithful through intermediation. Icon worshiping could be viewed as dangerous to the extent that the worshiper could relate to God through the intercession of the Virgin Mary or the Saints and could bypass the ecclesiastical hierarchy. There also were some political dimensions, with Emperors taking sides and, perhaps even more so, being portrayed as taking sides and behaving as tyrants by their opponents.

While the lists of references and maps are rather good, I do however have one significant reservation with this book that has to do with its format. It is essentially too short to do justice to what is a much more complex topic than what is generally believed. It is too short to allow the author to present a fully developed – and therefore a fully convincing – case. Finally, it is perhaps also too short to allow the author to avoid the risks of simplification and exaggeration at times. Four stars.

Hello world , I just want to say that if you've enjoyed the " Justice League " animated television series and want to learn how to draw your favorite character from the DC Universe then this book should be added to your library collection !!!

However , not to put this book down but I must confess that this book could have added some more things to make it even better , for example : Turnaround Sheets , Character Attitudes , Facial Expressions. The step - by - step drawing examples that are given in this book are very basic at best , all characters in this book get one pose each which you get a five step breakdown on how to draw them.

About the Author

Kumud Gokani is the popular host of the long-running show Cooking with Kumud. She is passionate about vegetarian cooking and, most importantly, about preparing dishes with the magic ingredient of love. She has traveled the world and been fortunate enough to learn how to cook from her grandmothers, mother, mother-in-law, sisters, and many other dear friends who have imbued her with a sense of love, joy, and creativity in the kitchen.

Originally from India, Gokani has also spent many years in the United Kingdom and Kenya. She currently lives in Ashland, Oregon, with her husband and granddaughters.

Food of love....

I have been blessed to have cooked and eaten food with Kamud and her husband, Krishna, in their home in Ashland. Her approach is that all food tastes better and is more healthful when prepared with prayers and love. She uses food as a healing modality. It was from her that I learned vegetables can be delicious, flavorful, and fun to cook. Dinners with others in the classes were an experience of meditation, laughter, and spirituality. I will always consider her and her husband my Indian parents who have loved and blessed me with so much. I cook with her first book and can't wait to continue the journey and adventure in Ayurvedic cooking, health, and healing.

About the Author
Herge was born in Belgium in 1907. The first Tintin story appeared in 1929 in the children’s magazine Le Petit Vingtieme. The Adventures of Tintin in the Land of the Soviets followed shortly thereafter. It was the first book in a series of 23 full length Tintin adventures. Herge died in 1983.

Very Good book for KIDS

Good clean entertaining book to keep kids under 13 busy. Lots of activities to keep their creative juices flowing and help them learn to draw and paint. Great book for TIN TIN fans. Highly recommend this book for even non TIN TIN readers just to get to know TIN TIN.
