Truely Forgotten Campaign Examined.

Jonathan Gawne has followed up his successful _Spearheading D-Day_ with another of what could be categorized as the tables of organization, uniforms and equipment genre of military history. This time around, he presents the least appreciated backwater operation of the entire war in Europe: the Brittany campaign.Gawne's forte is unit organization, military hardware, and uniforms and equipment. His audience are the veterans of the Second World War, specifically, those that participated in the battles and campaigns of which he writes (Gawne's own father fought throughout the campsign as a company commander in the 28th Infantry, 8th Division). To a lesser extent, the author targets collectors and re-enactors. Author/Historians with experience in working with veterans will attest to their tendency to complain bitterly if their unit is slighted by not being mentioned in a text dealing with a campaign or battle in which they had participated. Gawne is well aware of this fact and has developed a reputation for going above and beyond the call to include every American unit from the obvious to the obscure (the 23rd Special Troop, a tactical deception unit that operated in Brittany, is a case in point). This style may have its advantages, however, like the writer of a good movie script whose drama gets buried in the myriad of special effects, _Americans in Brittany_ leaves one intoxicated with sensual overload.Nine of the book's fifteen chapters are devoted to individual armor, infantry, and ranger units plus a chapter on artillery. Each page (of only 160-pages total) attempts to cram photos, side bars of people, places, and other interesting tid-bits, computer generated maps, models displaying uniforms, and numerous tables of organizations, not to mention a text font so small it blurs even the sharpest of visions. The photos, however, are impressive (some in color), many of which are contributed by veterans and family members. Particularly noteworthy are the photos offered by the family of Hermann Bernard Ramcke, the German commander of Fortress Brest, which are seen here for the first time. It is here that Gawne displays his expertise in captioning, oftentimes pointing out minute details that could otherwise escape the untrained eye.Like the military units he dipicts, however, when too many columns vie for a limited amount of space, something has to give. In this case,it's Gawne's narrative. Gawne tries his best to chronical a campaign that possesses a multitude of intertwining themes that are ripe for the picking. All of the factors that make for good military history are contained within the Brittany Campaign. Some of these themes include: logistics, professional military education, the so-called "war of the generals," armor and cavalry doctrine, its uses and abuses, and a much neglected aspect, the role of French civilians and armed resistance in the American effort. Due to what I believe are strategies of the French publishers, Gawne was limited in scope and forced to gloss over many of these important concepts with a broad brush stroke. In addition, the absence of even a "selected" bibliography or endnotes hinders what otherwise could have been a great reference work.For those seeking a more scholarly treatment of this truly forgotten campaign, this book may leave some wanting. Yet, Gawne's labor of love has certainly reached his intended audience, the veterans and their families.I strongly recommend it for anyone truly interested in the war in the European Theater of Operations (ETO).

Excellent description of little-known Brittany Campaign.

When the Brittany Campaign took place in August of 1944,
it was big news: Patton had broken out of hedgerow country
and was making unbelievable progress into German-occupied France.
However, as the destroyed port of Brest became a lower priority
than the drive directly east toward Germany, this initial thrust
to the south and west of Normandy (yes, west; look at a map)
became somewhat forgotten and has been overlooked in
post-WW II histories.
Author Gawne has done a wonderful job of researching this
campaign and gathering previously unpublished photos and
personal recollections into a well-illustrated and very
readable account. My own father served through this
campaign with the 6th Armored Division, and I was very
happy to see an entire chapter devoted to this important
but relatively unpublicized unit. Gawne's own father (to whom the
book is dedicated) served in the 8th Infantry Division, yet
the author devotes equal, detailed attention to all units
without unduly focusing on the Division which must be of
most personal interest to him.
He even devotes time to the French (FFI) and German units
that the Americans faced, an aspect often overlooked in
war histories.
This book should find a place on the bookshelf of any
student of WW II in the E.T.O.

Excellent narrative of an important post-D Day campaign

This nicely visual book documents in a coherent format the post-D Day Brittany Campaign. Before acquiring this book, I was beginning to believe that the histories of notable units like the 116th Regiment ended with the D Day invasion. As colossal as Normany was, the job was far from done and Brittany was an important cog in the wheel. The book is very accessible to both older and younger readers. My 14-year-old grandson was able to understand in words and pictures where his great-grandfather was wounded and put out of the war.

I look forward to other books written by Mr. Gawne.

The textbook's title is misleading.

This textbook is not a project-based approach to engineering design. There is not a single project in the entire book, not a single one. Instead, it is a first-person narrative interspersing folksy gee whiz stories about about the lives of engineers, examples of situations that an engineer might encounter and the authors' solutions, a few formulas and diagrams, and a few abstract questions that only get partially answered. There is a bit of math here and there, but there is no indication by the authors that the reader is required to either understand it or use it. The book is actually not a bad book to read, the stories can be amusing at times. The book could even provide a decent introduction to engineering challenges, without overwhelming the reader with the details an engineer would need to know to solve the problems themselves. However, I had to give it one start because the title of the textbook does not have much to do with what the textbook is actually about.

Books like these won't turn you into a good engineer. Sure it gives an OK overview of design approach for engineers, but the book is really just a way for someone with a PhD to profit off of engineering undergraduates. Also, if you are buying this because you are a Northeastern student, trust me when I say you have absolutely no reason to buy or even rent the book.

Not Impressed and bored.

As this author is one of my favorites, I was very disappointed in this book. Technically, the book is well written and her world-building skills are impressive. However, this was boring and trite. The addition of the time-travel sends the connection to the original series into left field. It was tortuous reading. Slogged through it the first time and then set it aside not even being sure what I read. Picked it up AGAIN quite a while later to re-read to determine if my first read was an accurate rendition of my opinion. Unfortunately, it was. Could not even finish it the second time.
I am not deleting it from my Kindle because it is an addition to a series but doubt that I will try a third re-read (and this is from an avid and voracious re-reader). This has also made me hesitant about the next book in the series.

Awesome series!

The Thousand Worlds of Ms. Phillips are such wonderful places to read about. Her phenomenal worldbuilding is outstanding in this genre, and her complex and interesting characters continue to populate those worlds for our reading enjoyment. Her addition of time travel makes this installment in the continuing Jasani tales open up entirely new inroads for even more adventures for those characters, both the familiar ones and the new ones we meet in this book. Having read all of her previous books, I can honestly say she always brings something new and fresh to her storylines, and I've never been left disappointed. I'd give Rayne's Return more than 5 stars if I could, it is that good. I highly recommend ALL of Ms. Phillips' books, and I am really looking forward to Salene's story.

THE Ultimate Book for Macaroon Lovers + Makers Alike

Got my hands on this beautiful book just yesterday, and I've already excitedly made my way through half of it. That's because, unlike most specialty recipe books, Danny's writing is uniquely engaging and entertaining -- recipes aside, you'll want to actually learn all about the history of macaroons, his company, and how to take "typical" macaroons to the next level. Of course, the recipes are killer, too. I already made his salted caramel macaroons and they came out FANTASTICALLY.

On top of that, the book features stunning photos by Alice Gao, and cute little illustrations that are often hilarious. Crack it open once, and you'll never put this charming book down.

One word of warning, though: this book is about macarOONs, not the french pastry known as the "macaron." So if you're looking for a book on those boring ol' sandwich cookies, you've come to the wrong place. However, one taste of a Danny Macaroon (whether packaged or made by YOU!), you'll never look back for a macarOn anyway. MacarOOns are here to stay, and Dan Cohen is the dessert-slinging prophet leading the way.

Yes, I'll have another.....

I have tried other macaroon recipes, but this one is, by far, the best. It produces a nicely toasted cookie, with a minimum of stickiness. It also passes the freezer test with flying colors. I have 2 minor complaints....one, the basic macaroon recipe covers almost every recipe in the book, and simply adds variations to the same cookie, and 2, I hate hardcover recipe books, because they are difficult to keep open in the kitchen. I always coil my paperback books so they remain open while in use.

Great book on materials

So far I love this book. I am currently taking a heavy construction methods class. This book is also being used for light construction(residential) class at my institution as well.

I am about half way through the course so I have not read the whole book. But so far, it's an easy read with lots of info. I love the side bars.They contain additional information about subject being discussed in that particular section. The questions at the end of each chapter are some what challenging. They are in sequential order so you don't have to look all over the chapter to find the answers. I have had books that quiz you on info that even isn't in the material being covered in that particular chapter. Some may think I am being silly but I believe one should be challenged to learn the material not be tested on how effectively you can comb through hundreds of pages. There is a ton of info in this text.

I also like the fact that it discusses sustainable construction in every chapter. In each section it explains how the material being discussed in the chapter pertains to sustainable practices. Being a LEED AP(US Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional), I believe it is extremely important that today's construction professionals embrace and fully understand sustainability as it pertains to construction. So called "green building" is quickly becoming a standard practice in the US and throughout the developed world.

This is a great text book. I definitely plan on keeping it for reference material as I continue my career.I would recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning the basics about construction materials and methods.

Excellent textbook...frustrating for Kindle

As a student studying Construction Management, I found this to be a terrific textbook. The diagrams and picture explanations I found to be very helpful, and there is a plethora of helpful information.

My one complaint has nothing to do with the content of the book however. My biggest frustration with this textbook had to do with the kindle experience. First of all, this did work fine on my Kindle HD, albeit with a small screen, it was difficult to pan around a large textbook page. My options for viewing it on a computer were limited because it cannot be viewed on the kindle cloud reader for viewing on web browser and it is not available for viewing on kindle for windows 8. So if you have a new laptop or computer and want to view the content on a bigger screen than a kindle you are out of luck. That needs to change. Please allow me to read this on a windows 8 device.
