THE IMMORTALS BOOK1

Ember and Truman first meet when she's ten and he saves her from a monster intent on killing her. Of course she doesn't remember because Truman who is a three hundred year old vampire wipes her memory of his part in saving her.

Truman over the next ten years pops in and out of Ember's life. Each time he does he allows Ember to remember their past together, but he always clears her memory of him each time he leaves her. When Ember is twenty things change between them, they become much closer physically and emotionally. When Ember is attacked by another vampire intent on revenge against Truman. He is devastated when he tries to restore her memory of him, he fails. The result is that Ember mistrusts him and holds Truman responsible for the major gaps in her memory.

I have read all of this authors books so far, and enjoyed each one. This book is the authors first venture into paranormal romance. I think she did a really good job. What was really good was the characters who are were brilliantly portrayed. Truman and Ember's relationship was not only hot and passionate, but believeable on an emotional level as well. I really felt and got the connection between them. This is an exciting read full of action, drama and romance. I look forward to the next book in the series. Each book is a complete story.

I love Elizabeth Finn books...

...but somehow wasn't in love with this one. I think she's fantastic and that her other three books are worth their weight in gold and I literally put this release date on my calendar and when Amazon didnt publish it fast enough, I went on to another website and bought it up real quick, but I just didn't connect with this one like I did with the others. I am awfully persnickety about paranormal romances and I find that i prefer they have equal parts explanation and plot development. Clarissa Clare's Mortal Instruments comes to mind (I know there isn't any erotica) because she develops the information and background on the shadow hunters and all other underworld creatures in a way that flawlessly flows through her plots. Unfortunately, I just wasn't super impressed with the explanation element and I think the amount that was added effected the plot development more than added to it. I will continue to buy up all (and I mean ALL) of Elizabeth Finn's books because I think she is an excellent writer, I just definitely prefer her real world romance books to her paranormal romances anytime.

This is one HOT & different Paranormal Romance novel

This is one hot book! Wow! I joked with my friend about this book I felt like I was reading Twilight Porn! It is definitely not a YA novel.

Elizabeth Finn is one of my favorite authors and I was really excited to read her paranormal romance novel Immortal Protector (The Immortals #1). I love a good vampire story and Ms. Finn delivered!

Immortal Protector is an interesting story. I loved how different it was considering there are so many vampire books out there. It felt completely new to me and I really enjoyed the story of Truman and Ember and their romance over a number of years.

Ember first meets Truman when she is 10 years-old after Truman saved her from a child predator that had kidnapped her. Truman is a vampire who feeds off child abusers but once he saves young Ember he feels the need to protect her for the rest of her life. He watches her from afar to protect her without her ever knowing. He saves her again at 17, then 20 when her mother dies but this time their romance begins. Truman must erase her memory each time she sees him because she cannot know about him and their history. Now Ember is 22 and Truman cannot stay away, he loves her too much and they begin to have a summer time affair but Truman's bloodline (his Vampire family) wants him away from Ember and focus on his family's obligations. He must protect Ember from his family even if that means he can no longer be with the women he loves.

I absolutely loved the first half of the book. I loved the unique relationship between Truman and Ember and how they came to know each other. Truman was a bit of a stalker but he loved Ember so much and had a connection to her like he has never had on anyone before. I also found Truman to be incredibly sexy, I've never been a fan of vampire boys but Truman is one hell of a vampire man!

Ember and Truman have the hottest sex I have ever read in a book! Wow!! I was seriously blushing while reading their love scenes. The majority of the book is sex, I do wish there was more of a story because it seemed like the love scenes took over the book. I enjoyed the story a lot and just wanted more.

The second half is really good as well; it focuses more on the drama between the vampires and the bloodlines. I did enjoy it as well but I really loved getting to know Ember & Truman in the first half of the book. I couldn't put the book down, maybe because it was the scenes were so hot, or because I enjoyed the story, or maybe it was because Truman turned me on so much but I just couldn't stop reading. Immortal Protector is a great ADULT, EROTIC Paranormal Romance novel.

I give Immortal Protector (The Immortals #1) 4 Stars.

Good for the USMLE

The book is full of high yield tables and figures. I think is useful for the USMLE but only after reading another source like Medical Microbiology and Immunology Examination and Board Review or from Kaplan. It also has many interesting questions at the end of each case. Is a very well organized text; don't think that you're going to see only cases and questions, NOT it begins each case with the basic concepts in that topic, then the case, and detail explanations of the disease, and some questions. If you don't have the time to read the complete text, I think that you can do very well just with the tables and Figures(full color), it contains some MRIs, CT, x-rays, and electron microscopies. Most of the cases are about the most high yield diseases (immunologic diseases) found in the USMLE and some are about diseases that you may have never heard but that may be tested as gene knock-outs or mutations cases. Is useful for USMLE Step 1,2 and 3 since it gives you basic concepts, pathogenesis and explanations about treatment.

Great for a second pass at immunology

My use of this book is probably a little different from most of the other reviewers here. My medical school immunology course used a different book (Lippincott's Immunology, which is passable); a year later, while studying for my USMLE step 1, I didn't want to waste time re-reading the basics in a textbook (i.e. I didn't need to read a 20-page chapter about the difference between innate and adaptive immunity). I also wasn't satisfied with the level of detail in my review books, which were fine for physiology but very weak in describing genetic immunodeficiency syndromes.

That's the benefit of this book-- the basics are there, but are integrated into cases alongside more "advanced" concepts. If you already have a good grasp on basic immunology (adaptive vs. innate, B vs. T, CD4 vs. CD8, Th1 vs. Th2), this is a much easier way to learn the complexities of immunodeficiency syndromes or autoimmune diseases (most of the cases in this book are one or the other). As such, I would definitely recommend using this book for a boards review of immunology (if you can spare a day or two from your review schedule to read it-- it's about 300 pages). It covers ALL the relevant immunology-- I can't imagine being surprised by an immuno question on test day if you know what's in here.

That said, I would NOT recommend this book as a starting point for learning immunology (and based on some of the other reviews here, that is unfortunately how it has occasionally been used). This was never meant to be a stand-alone immunology text, and I honestly can't imagine why it would be assigned as the text for an undergraduate introductory course. There are several good introductory immunology books out there-- the one I used is Sompayrac's "How the Immune System Works," but you have lots of choices. Once you have the basics, though, this book is excellent for making the jump to clinical immunology.

A great companion in both pre-clinical and clinical years!

I pretty much have to write a review on this since it got me through medical school immunology. In a course that was poorly organised, this book went above and beyond in teaching me the basic concepts (the intricacies of the complement system can be difficult for a beginner!) and the really important molecular biochemistry essential to understanding how the immune system works. While there may be more details than you might need in terms of undergraduate medical education classroom exams, I bet that if you do an immunology rotation or something of the sort, you'll shine.

This book is solid and I'm holding on to it through med school. The reason being, it explains a ton of immunological disorders and the types of infections and co-morbidities you're likely to encounter in a patient with them. Also, I liked the little post-it note graphics on the pages with high-yield information. This book also goes through treatments your patient should get, and even down to the dosages which is super useful. I also liked how in each case you would get lab values/results and a breakdown of what each Ig was and what it should be normally, so you have guided learning. This book also has practice questions that help you get the material down rather well.

I studied this along with Abbas, but definitely spent more time with Geha & Rosen. Good luck!

About the Author

Don Rowland is a Reader in Population Studies at the Australian National University, where he teaches courses on demographic methods, population trends and social changes. He has published monographs, and numerous papers in academic journals and books, focussing on migration, the family, ageing, and national population changes. His research has included many studies undertaken for Australian and international organisations, including the Committee for International Cooperation in National Research in Demography (CICRED), the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) and the United Nations. Like many demographers, his research and teaching is undertaken in an interdisciplinary setting; interests in family sociology and social gerontology supplement his formal academic qualifications in geography and demography.

Great overview of demographic methods and concepts

As a public health professional, I highly recommend this book by Donald Rowland to provide information about essential methods in demography in a format that is very interesting and easy to read. Dr. Rowland's name came up again and again during a class that I took on this subject - so many times that I decided that purchasing this book was no longer an option. Because an understanding of demography is critical for those interested in public health (and many of the other social sciences), I highly recommend this book to students, to researchers and to the population in general.

Basic Demographic Methods

I'm taking Demographic Techniques, and as a primarily qualitatively-trained person who has an aversion to quantitative approaches, this is clear and easy to understand. I got it used, but it was in great condition. According to my professor, this book, while published several years ago now, is a great basic primer for people unfamiliar with Demographic methods, which haven't changed a whole heck of a lot in a while. Doesn't have instructions for a Multiple Decrement Life Table, if that's your jam.

Convincing, but ultimately a sham

TL;DR: Read this website: http://www.johntreed.com/Kiyosaki.html and you will see why Robert Kiyosaki is not a good resource on personal wealth management. This whole "Rich Dad Poor Dad" debacle is, however, a great lesson in detecting garbage advice-giving companies that are only out for their own self-interests.

I think it should be concerning to potential buyers that most of the recent 5-star reviews are overly short, vague, and look likely to have been solicited to artificially improve this book's rating. I have no proof of this, but it is suspicious.

In any event, I can see why people are drawn into this book and the Rich Dad company that Robert Kiyosaki has built for himself. I consider myself financially savvy, and even I found myself drawn into his works. The general ideas sounded great, and lined up nicely with what I have been learning over the years in teaching myself how to manage my money. Additionally, the whole book is given a great big vote of confidence by "rich dad," Kiyosaki's personal financial advisor and super-successful father to his childhood friend.

The problem is, there is no rich dad. Everything about how Kiyosaki had this childhood mentor who taught him all these great life lessons about personal wealth is a work of fantasy. Here is an exact quote from Kiyosaki himself when pressed by SmartMoney Magazine about who rich dad really was: "Is Harry Potter real? Why don’t you let Rich Dad be a myth, like Harry Potter?" He boasts of several major real estate flips of which there are no public records. He also claims to buy the majority of small companies right before their share price sky rockets, then makes big money on the proceeds. Except, anyone that owns more than 5% of any publicly traded company is required to report the sale to the SEC. Kiyosaki's name is not on any of these reports. There is also a large pile of evidence that Kiyosaki became wealthy only after this book and his subsequent line of financial-advice products became best-sellers. To be sure, that is one way to get rich, but it is notably absent from the rest of his "profound" advice.

Admittedly, he does have some good points. Ones that I personally think are worth remembering for anyone trying to build their personal wealth are: Learn how to make your money work for you through wise investments, understand your tax obligations and ways to (legally!) reduce your tax liability, failure is all part of the process, and school (and a sad number of parents) will leave you woefully unprepared to manage your personal finances so you'll have to learn about this area of your life on your own. That last sentence is pretty much all that can be gleaned from this book, and all of it you'd probably figure out on your own anyway.

There are much better resources on Amazon and elsewhere that can teach you about money management from authors that actually built their wealth instead of selling you a bunch of false promises.

This book really helped me think and focus. If you looking for specifics or details on how to make money look somewhere else. If you are looking for a mindset and some good basic principals to follow this is your book. If I had to break the book down the main point is that you need to get an financial education on how money works and how to invest. His basic principal is to invest and use the return on your investments as income rather than working. Again, no details, just basic principals. This book was easy to read and is written in a more storytelling format rather than facts and data.

The book is okay but is not always general enough to apply to everyone. Some of the principles are universal (e.g. making your money work for you) but the author implies that working at a job for someone else is inferior to running your own business, owning real estate, etc. The author does a good job of telling you how HE got rich (through real estate) but does not necessarily offer alternatives. I did like the contrasting advice of the two dads.

My personal favorite finance books are The Wealthy Barber and the Millionaire Next Door.

The tried-and-true theme of best friends growing apart has been central to many, many YA novels. Vail's ( Wonder ) bittersweet foray into this familiar territory is an unusually absorbing adventure, thanks to her characteristic honesty and her eye for telling detail. Year-round residents of Nantucket-like Leeward Island, Molly and Vicky have been best friends their entire lives, but the appearance of Grace, a relatively sophisticated summer vacationer, threatens their apparently cozy relationship. However--as the narrative (in the form of Molly's diary entries) gradually makes clear--the girls' longstanding friendship is already fatally flawed. Angry, anguished and intensely possessive, manipulative Vicky employs countless strategies (anything from telling Molly she looks fat to convincing her to drop out of the high school's honor math course) to keep an emotional hold on her "best friend." Though loyal, empathetic Molly can accommodate a great deal of difficult behavior, Vicky eventually goes too far, unforgivably betraying Molly's trust. That Vicky and Molly's rift is likely to be permanent (and not a spat that can resolved by a good talk and sugary well-wishing) is just one hallmark of the authenticity of this carefully conceived story. Grade 6-9-A breezy, smart-talking novel that explores the ever-fascinating arena of young teen friendship. Vail covers some familiar territory: Molly gets her first menstrual period and copes with her best friend's jealously and mood swings when Grace, a sophisticated new girl, arrives on the scene. Molly discovers that Vicky has been reading her journal and decides that, in spite of the terrible loneliness she feels at losing a special, long-time friend, she will be better off without her. Much of the novel concerns Molly's attempts to figure out her place in her family and among her friends, and to project what her life will be like once she begins high school in the fall. At times her thoughts seem too eloquently expressed, but since the novel is structured as a journalistic account to record truths about her young life to be read when she is grown ("Dear Future Me,"), readers can accept a more introspective, literary style. Typical adolescent slang peppers the characters' conversations, giving those sections a more realistic sound. Sure to be as popular as Vail's earlier fast-moving novels, Do-Over (1992) and Wonder (1991, both Orchard).

Gr. 5-9. In a funny, desperate story about growing up female now, 14-year-old Molly would like to do the right thing, but somehow she always messes up. She's tense and nervous with her best friend, though Molly's never sure what she's done wrong. Part of her wants to be skinny and gorgeous, though she objects to dieting in general as being "very antifeminist." Her parents are no help. Dad tells her to lighten up; Mom wants her to be more popular instead of moping around the house reading books ("Mom and I have a lot of love between us without understanding each other at all"). Sometimes it just seems easier to remain a child. Yet she does talk to a college student who acts as a kind of mentor and makes her want to grow up and go to college and "stay up all night talking about God and eating pizza." As in Vail's Wonder (1991) and Do-Over (1992), the contemporary teenage voice is exactly right. The casual dialogue manages to say a lot in the spaces between the ritual phrases ("Seriously, whatever"). Some of the best scenes are pure farce (like the episode in which Molly is trying to wiggle loose a painfully stuck panty liner while chatting at a lunch counter with the boy she likes), but by the end of the story, the comedy is muted. Her best friend betrays her; Molly stops being a "nice girl," and she cuts loose. She's starting high school on her own. It's hard and lonely. There are no simple resolutions, but teens will find the questions of crucial interest. Why are girls so weird about food and body size? How do you trust someone who could betray you? Does that mean you can't have friends? Seriously, whatever. Hazel Rochman

Relatable! Even at 23...

This made me think back to my teenage days- and I could totally relate! It describes, in great detail, things a girl feels when she's growing up; how we have the ability to obsess over the silliest things, even though they don't seem so silly at the time.
I found the book amongst one of my friends' stuff, picked it up, and literally couldn't put it down. It hooked me from the beginning. Reading this makes you feel like you're not the only [odd one] in the world, and that other people have problems, too.
I also like the fact that it wasn't "sugar-coated." The conversation between the friends sounded like how my friends and I have talked. All in all...GREAT BOOK!

"Ever After" is a beautiful novel

This is definitly one of my favorite books I have ever read. No other author writes about teen girls as well as Rachael Vail does. This book is so true, it was like I was reading about myself. It is about a girl named Molly who is struggling with feelings, friendships, weight, family, boys, her identity, and life in general. I definetly hope you read this book (you will love it if you are anything like me!) and every other book by Rachael Vail as well. This is one of the few books I truly loved reading.

this book really opened my eyes. Rachel Vail yet again captures the exact feelings of a teenage girl. The main character, Molly, is growing up and starting to learn how to deal with more serious problems like friends, boys, parents, and life in general. The ending is sad, as Molly's best friend lets her down but she grows stronger from this let down. All teenage girls can relate with Molly and what she goes through.
