I have been studying the Hermetic principles and the law of attraction for many years now and Love this little book I spent eight hundred bucks on books on amazon last year and this is my first book review. Wonderful job you have taken the Master Key, Kyablion and other great works and put them into a simple easy to read book. Hats off to you sir the only thing I don't like is the fact that you wrote the same book I was attempting to write LOL Back to the drawing board.

Justin, you did a great job for your first book! Congratulations! I loved it. It was on point, to the "t", just as I expected it to be. I follow you on YouTube and listen to almost everyone of your podcast, videos, interviews etc. I now know and truly believe that life is what you make it. This book supports my belief way before I even knew what the law and attraction was. It's a easy read. Not long at all. I definitely would like a audio version of this book so I can listen to at my convenience so that way I can lock in all this good stuff in my subconscious. Thanks again. Happy fan!

Great thoughts, needs editing.

I liked the book. The bullet point presentation was a little weird at first but by the end of the book I liked it. Each little idea a cubbyhole unto itself but all working together. I was able to pick and choose the ones that resonated most with me and highlight them for later reading on my notes to solidify what I already learned. The reason I gave four stars instead of five was there are quite a few grammatical/spelling errors in here and it made the read difficult at times because it would stop me in my tracks. It's not too hard to figure out what was meant to be said but taking the time to do so distracts from the reading.

E. L. KERSTEN is the co-founder of Despair, Inc., a publishing and media enterprise dedicated to the dissemination of contrarian wisdom. He holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Communication from the University of Southern California and is the author of several of the company's popular Demotivators� products.

Kersten spent the early part of his professional career as a university professor, holding teaching positions at the University of Southern California, California State University (Frescno) and City University of New York, among others. In 1995, he was lured out of academia by a fledgling Dallas Internet startup. His experiences in the private sector managing the customer care operations for an explosive-growth ISP proved both tumultuous and transformational, ultimately inspiring the birth of Despair, Inc., in 1998.

He has been quoted by, appeared on, or written about in the Wall Street Journal, NPR's Marketplace, Financial Times, Harvard Business Review, Washington Post, BusinessWeek, Time, and many other outlets. He is married and lives in Texas. --Biography

A Parody That Motivates

The author is the creator of the Despair posters. He uses sarcasm to bring out truth in management practice. This book does the same.

As I read, I found myself imagining some other executives I've worked with nodding their heads as they read the book and mumbling to themselves, "Yeah, that's right I should just tell them to shut up or I'll replace you." It's easy to imagine "the other guy" doing all these things. Just like as we read the usual leadership or management book we consider that we pretty much already do all that stuff anyway but maybe could apply a point or two. That's the trouble with humans, we easily see the faults of others but evaluate ourselves as pretty much okay.

Here's where the book got me... I starting seeing my own actions in Kersten's parody. I cringed and thought, "Oh, I do that!" Humbling. And instructive. I found it highly motivational and funny!

The Art of Demotivation is still in print and available. The author's web site also features hilarious video vignettes demonstrating the art of demotivation.

This is quite simply a hilarious book so long as you don't take it seriously -- or a very sad book since it seems like it describes common management practices already in use.

How Can I Help You?

Dr. Kersten has made a tidy business out of ripping the motivational industry a new one. I had thought that his riff would have run its course by now, but it sure seems to be going strong.

And that's something Dr. K earned. If all you know about [...] is the poster series, this (apparently hard-to-find) book will change your mind. Dr. K helps us understand that this generation of Human Resources practitioners have accepted an "Age of Shamans." Somehow we've been induced to accept buzzwords and platitudes as acceptable, or even desirable substitutes for common sense in treating people, not to mention the golden rule.

Take it from me, the guy's got something to say which you'd benefit hearing. He's not just about irony and cynicism [although I confess to enjoying that, too].

He then explains the growing political support for the globalization of financial markets after the late 1950s by analyzing five sets of episodes: the creation of the Euromarket in the 1960s, the rejection in the early 1970s of proposals to reregulate global financial markets, four aborted initiatives in the late 1970s and early 1980s to implement effective controls on financial movements, the extensive liberalization of capital controls in the 1980s, and the containment of international financial crises at three critical junctures in the 1970s and 1980s.

He shows that these developments resulted from various factors, including the unique hegemonic interests of the United States and Britain in finance, a competitive deregulation dynamic, ideological shifts, and the construction of a crisis-prevention regime among leading central bankers. In his conclusion Helleiner addresses the question of why states have increasingly embraced an open, liberal international financial order in an era of considerable trade protectionism.

This book is the JAM

This is one of my very favorite books. It's challenging, & you need a pretty strong grasp of international & monetary economics in order to fully wrap your head around it. It would make an interesting political-economic history even without that understanding of the economics underlying what Helleiner's talking about — but folks who do have that background will feel like they're seeing the Matrix.

Globalization isn't just economic

This was a book required for my graduate class, hence the original purchase. As a Public Affairs student I am taking a class on International Political Economy. This book lays out an interesting case for the actions of individual countries, bankers, and globalization. While this book is a must read for anyone looking at international economy, it was a real struggle at times for me most likely because I don't have a strong background in trade versus finance policy.
