Glamour Girls of Sixties Hollywood: Seventy-Five Profiles, by Tom Lisanti

During the 1960s, many models, Playboy centerfolds, beauty queens, and Las Vegas showgirls went on to become "decorative actresses" appearing scantily clad on film and television. This well illustrated homage to 75 of these glamour girls reveals their unique stories through individual biographical profiles, photographs, lists of major credits and, frequently, in-depth personal interviews. Included are Carol Wayne, Edy Williams, Inga Neilsen, Thordis Brandt, Jo Collins, Phyllis Davis, Melodie Johnson, and many equally unforgettable faces of sixties Hollywood.

Review
"Lisanti gives 1960s glamour girls something they never had before in film circles: respect. His approach is a mixture of fun with the seriousness of a film historian. The concoction is irresistible, and it's fantastic that these gals get their turn to tell their stories and share their good and bad times in the movie world...valuable...highly recommended. Lisanti is the supreme chronicler of the '60s era...his books are always interesting...marvelous"--Classic Images; "endlessly fascinating"--Brutarian; "answers--once and for all--burning questions about Carol Wayne (and others)...an illustrated homage"--Communication Booknotes Quarterly; "definitely one of his best...fascinating...detailed profiles...entertaining as well as informative...many stunning black and white photographs"--Cinebeats.com; "Lisanti is no stranger to fans of cult movies. He has written numerous volumes tracing the careers of character actors and sexy starlets...most ambitious...a treasure trove"--Cinema Retro; "profiles on 75 actresses as well as some fascinating interviews"--Cinedelica; "sure to delight 60's pop culture fans and cinema buffs"--Midwest Book Review; "intimate profiles of 75 of Hollywood's favorite bikini girls! Camp classic heroines like Lisa Seagram, Tura Satana, Inga Neilsen and Margaret Teele are just a few of the b-movie actresses featured here. This encyclopedia of retro babes is a must for fans of old-school Hollywood glamour"--BudPlant.com.

R.I.P. FRANK SINATRA JR
By victoria
I loved being included in Tom Lisanti's fun book. Today, I especially remember this time in my life. A time I very rarely talk about. Tom checked the facts and handled my involvement in the Frank Sinatra Jr. kidnapping case respectfully and with great care.It was 1963. I was a teenage girl totally smitten with a teenage boy. A gifted boy. A musical prodigy. Sweet, introverted and so talented. Then, one night everything changed. We were talking on the phone, laughing and fooling around, when I heard a loud knock on the door. Frankie said "Hold on. It must be room service." Then I heard voices and scuffling and the phone went dead. The next morning the Feds were at my grandparent's front door questioning me since the hotel's phone records showed I was the last call Frankie made before he was kidnapped. From that moment on, my life were reporters getting all the facts wrong, being subpoenaed, refusing to show up, so the court "police" came and pulled me out of a rehearsal I was doing for a musical country revue, dragging me to the trial dressed in a cowgirl's getup. It was surreal, embarrassing and frightening. How can one ever forget such an incident?

Another Great Book By Lisanti Covering 60s Superchicks
By Jim Bagley
Having devoured all of Tom Lisanti's previous books (Fantasy Femmes of `60s Cinema, Drive-In Dream Girls, Film Fatales, Hollywood Surf & Beach Movies), I was psyched when his latest effort became available at Amazon.com. My only complaint in the past was Lisanti's failure to include a write-up on one of my favorite `60s superchicks Carol Wayne (Bootsy Nightingale on I Dream of Jeannie, Temple on I Spy, a bunny rabbit on Bewitched). Imagine my delight when I discovered that Lisanti had not only profiled Miss Wayne for this book, he also featured her on the cover!

For Glamour Girls Of Sixties Hollywood, Lisanti has profiled 75 more babes from yesteryear. They are: Sivi Aberg (the Gong Show hostess), Beverly Adams (How To Stuff A Wild Bikini's Cassandra, Lovey Kravezit in the Dean Martin starring Matt Helm ficks), Maureen Arthur (Hedy La Rue in How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying), Pamela Austin (Kissin' Cousins, Twilight Zone episode "Number Twelve Looks Just Like You), Thordis Brandt (In Like Flint, Funny Girl), Bettina Brenna (Funny Girl, Gloria Buckles on "The Beverly Hillbillies), Eve Bruce (Cactus Flower), Michele Carey (Live A Little Love A Little with Elvis Presley), Victoria Carroll (Nightmare In Wax), Amedee Chabot (Muscle Beach Party), Arlene Charles (Clambake), Suzanne Charney (the Lead Frug Girl in Sweet Charity), Corinne Cole (Miss January in Murderer's Row), Jo Collins (Lord Love A Duck), Yvonne Craig (Batgirl), Pamela Curran (Mutiny In Outer Space), Danica d'Hondt (Lucretia Nazarone on "The Man From UNCLE", Mother Goose A Go-Go), Phyllis Davis ("Love American Style" blackout skit babe, "Vegas"), Susan Denberg (Frankenstein Created Women), Lyn Edington (Elvis vehicle Girl Happy), Dolores Faith (The Phantom Planet), Linda Foster (The Ambushers), Marianne Gaba (Animal in How To Stuff A Wild Bikini), Sue Hamilton (Peanuts in How To Stuff A Wild Bikini), Joy Harmon (car washing nymph in Cool Hand Luke), Ena Hartman ("Dan August's" secretary, Terminal Island), Alexandra Hay (Skidoo), Marianna Hill (Paradise Hawaiian Style, Fredo's wife in Godfather II), Susan Holloway (Point Blank), Teri Hope (Fun In Acapulco), Mary Hughes (blonde goddess in most of the Frankie & Annette Beach films - RIP Mary!), Melodie Johnson (Coogan's Bluff), Alena Johnston (War Goddess), Joi Lansing (Lester Flatt's wife on "The Beverly Hillbillies," Marriage On The Rocks), Anna Lavelle (Beach Ball), China Lee (What's Up Tiger Lily), Lara Lindsay (The Sweet Ride), Vicki London (Village Of The Giants), Darlene Lucht (The Haunted Palace), Deanna Lund (Valerie on "Land Of The Giants"), Linda Marshall (The Girls On The Beach), Lee Meredith (The Producers), Donna Michelle (Animal in Beach Blanket Bingo), Ann Morell (Elvis flicks Tickle Me, Paradise Hawaiian Style), Cynthia Myers (Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls), Inga Neilsen (A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, Funny Girl), Alberta Nelson (Puss of Eric Von Zipper's gang in the Frankie & Annette Beach films), Warrene Ott (The Witchmaker), Beverly Powers (Kissin' Cousins), Anne Randall (Westworld), Jacki Ray (In Like Flint), Dolly Read (Mrs. Dick Martin who appeared in Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls), Jeannine Riley (first Billie Jo on "Petticoat Junction," original cast of "Hee Haw"), Pamela Rodgers (The Maltese Bippy), Linda Rogers (Winter A Go-Go), Myrna Ross (Boots of Eric Von Zipper's gang in the Frankie & Annette Beach films), Tura Satana (Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!), Christiane Schmidtmer (The Big Doll House), Linda Gaye Scott (Little Fauss And Big Halsy), Lisa Seagram (A House Is Not A Home, Where Love Has Gone), Bobbi Shaw (Buster Keaton's busty sidekick in Beach Blanket Bingo and How To Stuff A Wild Bikini), Eva Six (Beach Party), Sharon Tate (Valley Of The Dolls), Margaret Teele Mother Goose A Go-Go), Corrina Tsopei (A Man Called Horse), Victoria Vetri (When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth), Jane Wald (Under The Yum Yum Tree), Jan Watson (a slaygirl in the Matt Helm movies), the aforementioned Carol Wayne and her sister Nina Wayne (a regular on "Camp Runamuck"), Delores Wells (Annette's friend Sniffles in Muscle Beach Party and Bikini Beach), June Wilkinson (The Candidate), Edy Williams (Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls), and Francine York (Noble Niolani on "Lost In Space"). My favorite section of his features is always the "Where Are They Now" updates.

In addition to these profiles, Lisanti also secured interviews with Brandt, Carroll, Charny, Cole, d'Hondt, Johnson, London, Meredith, Morell, Neilsen, Randall, Rogers, and Seagram. The interviews are quite entertaining, especially when these ladies spill the beans on their often self-centered co-stars like Babs Streisand and John Wayne.

It would seem that Lisanti has covered all of the superchicks - prominent as well as not as prominent - who appeared in films during the `60s. I would suggest his future editions include a book on `60s sweeties who starred on tv shows, like all of the Petticoat Junctions gals (including my favorite Lori Saunders), Lost In Space's Marta Kristen and Angela Cartwright, Room 222's Karen Valentine, and The Mod Squad's Peggy Lipton. Also, a book on `70s supermamas, especially the Blaxploitation gals Pam Grier, Tamara Dobson, and Jeannie Bell. Write on Tom Lisanti!

Great Survey of 60s Sirens
By Nick Howes
Another excellent book from Lisanti covering the girls of the beach, horror, biker, and Elvis movies, many of whom disappeared some time after. Same format as before, profiles of a couple pages with a photo of numerous actresses, some of them expanded with direct quotes and observations taken from interviews. From Carol (Carson's Matinee Girl) Wayne and Barbara (Goldier Hawn replacement on Laugh-In) Rhodes to Deanna (Land of the Giants) Lund and Jeanine (Hee Haw, Petticoat Junction) Riley. Great stuff, lots of background details that help fill out your mental database on B-movies of the 1960s.
