About the Author
Aaron Mattes received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Wisconsin State University-Superior, 1970, majoring in Physical Education. Mattes received his Master of Science Degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, 1972, with special emphasis in Kinesiology and Kinesiotherapy. Mattes served as pitching coach for the University of Illinois baseball team from 1970-1976. Over the past 45 years, he has spent well over 250,000 hours in sports participation, sports and health instruction, rehabilitation, athletic training, adapted physical education, sports medicine, training and prevention programs. He is a registered Kinesiotherapist (#449) and a certified member of the American Kinesiotherapy Association. He is a licensed Massage Therapist (#3864) and a member of the Florida State Massage Therapy Association and the American Massage Therapy Association (#3864). Mattes is a member of the Association of Medical Rehabilitation Administrators, and the National Rehabilitation Association (#039204).

Great for Practitioners

Shared the book with my physical therapist since its methodology was more suited to actual providers as opposed to individuals seeking to strengthen parts of the body. She thought it was terrific and actually used some of the methods on me. Once our sessions ended I opted to give her the book as a gift of thanks which she seemed to genuinely appreciate.

An excellent book for stretching

This method and book were suggested to me by a trainer who studied with Aaron Mattes. I like having a book like this in the exercise room in my home. Many of the stretches require another person to help but all stretches can be performed alone. You can do a google search and find a number of sites that use the Mattes method and many of them have video instructions.

depends on what you;re using it for,.

Active isolated Stretching works to a point. the Mattes techniques were the one my physical therapist were using to treat an injury I had. The book has an outdated look and feel, the graphics lack the modern look and good instructions to take take
you through al;l phases of the stretch, as in another book, the one by Craig Ramsay. My physical therapist was impressed with the Ramsay book, and liked it, hadn;t seen it before. Mattes and Ramsay used somewhat different approaches. Ramsay lacks the image of expertise that Mattes, has acquired in the field.
A lot depends on what your aims, and condition are. I found the Mattes books hard to follow, the Ramsay book was very easy to
use. I'm a person who likes to study up on any condition I have or the treatment being given. I find that buying the books relating to that are helpful. I;d suggest talking things over with your physical and finding out what each stretch he's giving you aims to do.
Active Isolated Stretching can be of use. So can Ramsay. My PT was open to combining both for me.

Ramsay is especially goos for people who work out and don't have a stretching program, or want to expand their's. Some of the people at my gym look great, but not stretching leaves you prone to injury, and later problems. The other thing about Ramsay's stretching technique si that it promotes a feeling much like yoga, of calm, and relaxation. So taiilor your choice to your own needs, and if you are in PT treatment, talk it over with your PT. Also, if you have a perosnal trainer, many don;t even teach you to stretch.
