Very useful for us trainee teachers.

This book is an excellent buy. It has hints and tips to help with facing the hurdles of being a trainee such as difficult lessons (and students) to actual class prep work. It is well set out and has a depth to it that makes even the most complex understandable. There are many 'sample' teaching methods to study as well as important self-test sections. A great pal to turn to in moments of despair!

Good tips, but not as helpful as I thought it would be

I will soon be a first time ESL teacher. Frankly, I am surprised at the great ratings this book has received. Yes, it has some good tips, but I don't feel like I have a better understanding of how people learn languages. A lot of it seemed like it was common sense. (For example, do you really need a book to tell you that people need to be exposed to language in different ways? i.e. Traditional grammar practice is fine, but a student needs to be engaged in the language through other forms of practice. Duh.) If anything this book reassured some thoughts I have had about how to teach.

I liked how he seperated the chapters into "How to teach Reading" or "How to Teach Listening, Writing..." etc. But as I said, nothing in them was terribly enlightening. (90% of the chapters are examples based on the student's level. So therefor if you are only teaching one level, 80% of the chapter is useless to you!) Also, I was annoyed that he dropped the "Beginner" examples in a couple of chapters. I liked those examples, because I will be teaching young children. I do think that some of his more advanced examples could be "dumbed down" for beginner audiences, but he could have had more examples in some chapters.

The "What If" chapter is useful. (i.e. "What if the students are at different levels...What if the class is very big...What if the students don't want to talk?")As are the first few chapters about how to be a teacher in general. He gives good tips on how to speak in class, how to relate to students, lesson plans, how to give instructions, etc. I believe that this was the best part of the book.

I only gave the text 3 stars because I think that the middle chapters, which specifically concern teaching English (the topic of the book!), could have more information in them. I breezed through them because, minus the examples which I mentioned above, there is not that much information in them. You should read this book along with a more indepth study of teaching ESL.

This first-person narrative is an accomplished debut for lawyer Brandt, a former Chief Deputy Attorney General for Delaware. Lou Razzi, a tough Delaware cop is framed, convicted, dismissed from his job, and jailed in the early 1960sjust prior to the Miranda decision. Fifteen years pass; the frame is uncovered; and he returns home from Brazil to settle some scores, as if "the right to remain silent" didn't exist. Detailed, realistic, and with excellent character development and motivation, this is as good as the best in a recent crop of outstanding thrillers by former or current law enforcement officials, e.g., Bob Leuci's Captain Butterfly and Scott Turow's Presumed Innocent . Good Story that Moves Quickly

This is a good and entertaining story set in Wilmington, Delaware.
This murder mystery reminded me somewhat of movies of the same done in the 1940's. It had that kind of snappy air in dialogue and attitude.
A retired detective comes back to town in a deal to let him shake off a false accusation. He is supposed to work one day and then leave his troubles behind him. Wouldn't you know it, that one day gets him embroiled in a murder mystery unusual to sleepy Wilmington, Delaware (this was written pre-Capano) when all he really wants is to forget his past troubles and embrace the quiet life.
This was a fun book, well written and entertaining. Apparantly Mr. Brandt has not again picked up the pen, which is a shame. He ought to give story writing another try.

The writing is sparse and taught. The bombshell Honey Golden is an inventive creation. The narrator is well-drawn, flawed, yet ultimately triumphant. A great read. I eagerly anticipate future offerings from Mr. Brandt

a lovely book which is very helpful

It was in 2003 when my wife and I got married, and Maldives was chosen as our honeymoon destination. There were not so much information about the resorts back then so we've had a hard time making the decision. Luckily we did a great choice and had a couple of wonderful weeks there. At the end of that trip when we spend our final hours there at Male (the capital), we found this book (the 1st edition) at a local souvenir shop and bought it right away. The ratings about the relative price and room density, and the icons in the "information box" of this book give you a quick understanding of each resort and you may find it quite easy to narrow down your choices from more than one hundred to only a few according to your own interests. Beautiful pictures and well arranged texts give you a very comfortable and relaxed feeling when you read it, just like what the Maldives does. I’ve purchased the following editions of the book as a collection because Adrian Neville keeps visiting the resorts and making updates. Planning a holiday to the Maldives with Adrian Neville's knowledge of the islands and the unbiased and pertinent information contained in this book makes it all much less stressful. The illustrations are beautiful. There has been tremendous attention to detail. This is a definitive tome on high end orthopedic imaging. It contains information and concepts that are pretty cutting edge (that seem to just be getting into the literature). If you're looking for THE text on orthopedic imaging, this is the one. It BLOWS away the DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING Series - Orthopedics (by Dr. Stoller also).

This is a very large series of 2 books. Like that it's broken up into upper and lower extremity. Initially, cost freaked me out a bit. But, for what you get ... particularly the really high quality images and illustrations (and lots of them), it's well worth it.

Essential for MSK radiologist but a little dry

This remains an essential textbook for musculoskeletal radiologists although one criticism would be that is a little dry . It steers clear of the opinion which makes books by Resnick or Helms so entertaining and useful. Stoller and some of the authors he has used for the chapters are enormously experienced and it would be good to read a more personal perspective .

Best book in orthopaedic surgery. Huge amount of photos and illustraions, in detail review, almost every disease and the sports injuries are covered in this book. Very practical, easy to read, must-have for orthopadeic surgeon. This is not only the best textbook, this is the beautiful artwork.

Readers of Morpurgo's Waiting for Anya (1990), which also featured an orphaned bear cub, may feel this novella is set in the same tiny, sheepherding village in the French Pyrenees. Roxanne, a sweet girl who sings like an angel, adopts a gentle abandoned cub that adores her. Years later, when a famous pop singer and his entourage arrive to make a music video based on ``The Pied Piper of Hamelin,'' Roxanne is given a starring role; she is soon charmed away to a life of fame and fortune, leaving her beloved bear behind. The morning after her departure, the bear is found dead, upright in his cage as if staring after Roxanne. This is an affecting story, certainly, but the bear's sudden death is melodramatic, and Roxanne is such a sympathetic character that her sudden neglect of home ties is scarcely credible. Michael divides his time between his writing and running Farms for City Children, a charity which each year takes up to 3,000 children to a working farm for a week. A Must Have for Any New Java Developer!

This is one of the best introductory Java books I have ever read. I've been learning Java for a few months now and I have run in to a few sticking points. I easily picked up some of the basic concepts but, like many new programmers I imagine, as I got further in I found that I was stuck on a few concepts. This book is what got me unstuck. It explains code in a much more practical way than other Java books that I have read. It has many sections where it will have you try out a concept from the book, then it will break down each piece of the code and show you what each component of it is doing in the big picture. This approach really helped me to understand the components of Java that I was having a hard time understanding.

I have read a few other beginner Java books, you'll see Head First Java on every forum about the best beginner Java books, Head First Java is a great book, and I would recommend that as well as there are some fun projects in it, but this book is really the one that made things click for me.

I also want to point out that this book delves in to other technologies that people use along with Java such as, JDBC, SQLJ, Hibernate, SOAP, REST, etc. If you're a beginner in development reading this review and you've never heard of those technologies don't worry, this book gives you a great foundation of knowledge about them and helps you to understand what situations you may need them for.

Overall I would say this book is a must have for any new comer to Java. Feel free to comment on this review if you have any questions about my experience with this book.

About the Author
Rosalind S. Chou, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Georgia State University, is the author of Asian American Sexual Politics and co-author with Joe Feagin of The Myth of the Model Minority.

Joe R. Feagin, currently Ella C. McFadden Professor at Texas A&M University, graduated from Baylor University in 1960 and acquired his Ph.D. in sociology at Harvard University in 1966. Feagin has taught at the University of Massachusetts (Boston), University of California (Riverside), University of Texas, University of Florida, and Texas A&M University. Feagin has done much research work on racism and sexism issues and has served as the scholar in residence at the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. He has written 53 books, one of which (Ghetto Revolts) was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. He is the 2006 recipient of a Harvard Alumni Association achievement award and was the 1999–2000 president of the American Sociological Association. He is also the 2013 recipient of the Arthur Fletcher Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Association for Affirmative Action.

right on target

One of my graduate classes required me to look into "Asian Issues", so I bought a few books on amazon and this one really captured my attention. It was easy to read, it gave great examples/real life experiences, I could hardly put it down. It is also a great length if you are a busy person who wants to read a book that just gets to the point. I definitely recommend this book for all people. We should all strive to learn more about the issues people face, especially the often ignored/looked over Asian issues. Hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

This book is the most comprehensive and accurate portrayal of the inherent racism prevalent in our society today. I have experienced a lot of the situations, particularly in school, K through college that this book writes about. A must read for all Asians and people of color because it raises greater awareness and hopefully more preventive measures taken to stop the systematic racism that occurs on a daily basis. Bravo to the authors on such a prolific book!

One of the best PowerShell Texts in my library.

I purchased this book mainly for its tie-ins to the Sapien Studio, a suite I use at work. However, it has become my most bookmarked text, and almost all those bookmarks have nothing to do with the Sapien Suite but are "ah ha" bits of information that had eluded me in countless other manuals. If you use Sapien, you MUST get this book. If you use any other IDE for PowerShell and you skip because of that, you're doing yourself a disservice. This is an excellent PowerShell Text that has ties to an IDE. Not the other way around.

You refer to there being "complete instructions" for setting up a test environment in the Appendix, which I have yet to find.
